Them: Brown eggs are better because the ones at the store are "all natural", "cage free" "organic" etc. The white one are plain eggs. I only want brown eggs.

Me: my chickens eggs all taste the same, they all eat the same food, but they lay different color eggs.

Them: well brown eggs are better for you and they taste better.

Me: (facepalm) well what about green/blue eggs?

Them: Ewwwwww, theres green/blue eggs? Whats wrong with them???

Me: in mind (OMG, Really?????) I'll just give you the brown ones

Them: ok

Do that but when they learn that lesson make them beg for the eggs. ;)

In defense of those of us who once believed you need a hen and a rooster for eggs . . . I thougt it might be a hormone thing - that the hen (or hens) wouldn't ovulate without a rooster around.

Well, cats have to do "it" in order to ovulate . . .

And, of course, once I found BYC, you all set me straight! Plus I've learned a lot since then, too! Thanks!!

We don't have our chickens yet . . . we're just building our coop. Slowly (very slowly), but steadily. Even though my grandfather was a carpenter, apparently that's not genetic. . . or at least I didn't inherit the carpenter gene. However, when I approached my neighbor to let them know about our poultry plans, her initial response was "What? Why would you do that (I had already told her it was for the eggs, as well as the experience)? " Then she wanted to be sure they wouldn't be too noisy - I told her no, we weren't getting any roosters, and the chickens wouldn't make much noise. She still seemed skeptical. Then, those same neighbors, just a couple of weeks ago had a pool party with some friends (adults & kids, including some pretty little ones) on a Friday night. No problem . . . but it was still going strong at 11:30. Our kids are in school together & ride the bus together, so they knew a 9 & 10 year old were trying to sleep here, plus DH had worked several 15 hour days in a row and was pretty pooped. So I duitifully went over there to ask them to tone things down a bit, and was met with a bit of indredulity . . . but Heaven forbid we get chickens that might make a bit of noise now & then . . . sheesh!

I wonder if they'll want fresh eggs . . .

Even though you have been a member for several Months,

I grew up with chickens and knew a lot of things about them, including not needing a Rooster. This forum has taught me and refreshed my memory about so many things. It is amazing and the people here are wonderful.

I have neighbors that do the pool thing too. One night they went past midnight. I use ear plugs on those nights.

I bet your neighbors will love the eggs. It's a great way to smooth things over.

Best,

I suppose you never had cats before, otherwise you'd know female cats go into heat without a male around and if a male gets a scent of a female cat in heat but can't get to her because you have the female penned up the Tom cat will throw all sorts of a fit trying to get to her....

Actualy they are right. While they may go into heat they do not actually ovulate until the male penitrates and removes. The act of removing and barbs on the penis (can I say that here?) causes the female to ovulate. This is just one of the reasons it is so hard to AI large wild cats .Also there is no easy way to AI small domestic cats for several factors including low product from the male. It can be done but its VERY hard to do. There are several stages of heat cycle in cats. Cat reproduction is one of the things I know a bit about. Bred and showed persians for 10 years. On track now my mother refuses to eat my fresh chicken eggs or fresh chicken because she says it tastes stronger and is gross. I have issues with ALL underdone egg white. Always have but then I have issues with anything that looks like mucas.

I think you will be hard pressed to find a female that ONLY ovulates with a male present.

Edited to say: I stand corrected by the above post... Hmmm... the things you never knew you didn't know...

Well today my neighbor asked to see my "retarded" chicken Zoey, which almost made me cry...she is not retarded but does have special needs and cannot fly, get into or out of the coop or eat treats without my help. After nursing her through a near death experience and developing a special relationship with her, something my neighbor clearly does not understand or care about, it hurt my feelings. Zoey is a real sweet girl and is very special to me, so, that was the dumbest thing said so far about my chickens...other than my husband complaining bitterly when I let her in the house...but, that is another post....
I would inform them that "that word" is a BAD word. In fact they made a comercial about it that included racial slurs! I couldn't believe it!
But my point is... that word offends more people than you alone and it is just one more that should not be said. EVER...
I have had a few pets that were a little bit special, so I know where you are coming from.

I was going to second that 'in heat' and 'ovulation' are not the same thing.

Other strange animals include desert whiptail lizards, and many many insects that have a collective or hive (ants, bees, etc) , and several amphibians and simple fish.
