I'm a painter and I've seen so much waste on jobsites its not even funny. They could build habitat for humanity houses with the stuff they throw away. I picked up 8 boxes of tile on one job, and the bosses always try to palm off excess paint on us. if you dont mind having joints every 3 feet, you can have expensive marble and granite counter tops for nothing.

scrap marble and granite would make great dropping shelves under the roost, might be easier to clean.

I agree about the waste on jobsites.

However, when I went to talk to the foreman of the last jobsite I visited (which was being framed with 2x6s and had GORGEOUS, LOOOOONNNNGGGGG 2x6s overflowing the trash bin!!!), he rudely ran me off.

He said that if I was hurt "dumpster diving", they would be liable, and if he ever found me on the site, he would call the cops and press charges for trespassing.

What a WASTE!!!

DH is building a coop now out of salvaged lumber a friend got us off of a job site. He brought us a BIG dump truck load and all we had to pay him was 40.00 for gas because it was his company truck. We got full sheet of plywood, shingles and 2x4's out the ying-yang. I thought is was a great deal.

I've gotten some great building material from the dump. My Grandfather in law actually works at the dump in his town and has brought home some cool things. He gave my DH a jigsaw that he used for 5 years before it finally died and a drill that is still working. It's amazing what people will toss out.

Oh how I love free building materials!
Last summer, DH and I built a 6x6 Turkey coop 6'6" in the front and 5'6" in the back...and...a 12' x 14" breeder coop, with 4 seperate pens....for under $200. All the wood was free..we paid for the roofing, and some bolts for the walls. We are already planning the "monster coop" for this summer. 12 x 30.

Thanks on thr compliment on the coop...once it dries up a bit, I will get better pics of it, now its paited..and we have the pop doors on....the doors and windows are all opened and closed by ropes. SO much easier than trying to open them all by hand.
