Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) Thread!! šŸ‰ āš”

And you're right. It's not the same as gathering around a table with pizza, chips, and other junk food while getting off track and then getting back to playing!
We've tried that with my dispersed group and it just wasn't the same. Timing was also hard with 3 hours difference in times for all of us and schedules.
You can play D&D online. There are tools such as Roll20 and you can integrate Discord in with it as well.
Yeah I can totally see how it would not be the same. There's just something about laughing and talking with each other in real life while playing D&D!:D

This is my first time DMing but I'm making a campaign for my friend group where they have to infiltrate a Mafia and bring it down to its knees, but knowing how players like to derail the DM's plans, they will probably just end up joining the gang and becoming the lead crime ring after they kill the previous boss. Any recommendations? Now, if you will excuse me I have to go practice my Godfather impression.

As the DM, keep the bad guys on schedule with their plot points. Your characters want to take a detour? Cool, chase 'em down that rat hole. But while they're off doing whatever random chaos, the bad guys are still rolling along. It likely means they're stronger when your party finally gets to them, or that the odds are more heavily stacked for the baddies. So be it. Don't be afraid to sacrifice a character for story drama, or if they're just being stupid.

This has a side effect of your party feeling a heck of a lot more excited about taking the baddies down if they're very strong. Softball campaigns are a bit boring, so offer them a challenge with some real risk and real reward.

And build a table of D100 random encounters. You cannot stop them from turning left when you're leading them to turn right, so be ready to throw flaming beehives at them when they do. Especially if they're super annoying about it.

"Oops, I rolled a 100. The flask you just passed around the fire was cursed by the Archdruid of Chaos. Each member of the party needs to roll a 20 and I'll tell you what kind of animal you just polymorphed into."
