Duramycin injectable - can it be given orally?

Just checking in to see how she's doing.

If you don't start seeing improvements soon with the Terramycin (Oxytetracycline), and the labored breathing persists, it may be best to send a few tracheal swabs to either your state poultry lab, or a national veterinary diagnostic lab like Zoologix. Testing with your state will likely be cheaper, but the prices are usually fair, and this way if you are dealing with a respiratory infection you know which kind, and can use an antibiotic best suited for it. You can speak with the Poultry Diagnostician, and figure out which tests would be suited for your situation.

Here are some links.

Thank you so much for all of these great resources and information! I actually just got the terramycin ointment in the mail yesterday, so I did the first treatment last evening. I’ve been using the microcyn pink eye spray several times a day, and her eyes seem to be slightly less irritated. I have high hopes for the ointment! It’s much cooler here this morning, and she’s not breathing with her mouth open, so I think it may very well be due to heat/humidity.

I haven’t given her any of the antibiotics (oxytetracycline - Duramycin 72-200) yet. I think I’ll see how the ointment does and then go from there. She’s been getting into the pond more often, which I’m hoping will help her wash out her eyes more, too! She really hates when I clean them with the spray.

My drake was the victim of an eagle attack 2 weeks ago. I gave him the duramyacin in his food and water but I only did it for 24 hours to prevent infection. I was prepared to inject him if needed, but it didn’t come to that. I am not a vet, i used this website as a dosing guide, but I honestly don’t know how many days of this I would do. I only did 24 hours because I was concerned about kidney function and he wasn’t actually sick.

Most of Poultry DVM's dosages are wrong, sadly.

I believe it can be given orally, but if it is, it should be given one to two hours before a meal as it may cause regurgitation. Oxytetracycline can cause ever muscle necrosis when given intramuscularly in birds.

The dosage is in this thread. https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/dosing-of-oxytetracycline.1401080/#post-22993274 Post 5#

But first, consider that ducks are rarely affected by respiratory disease's, I don't think I would treat her just yet.

Could you upload a video of her to youtube or Vimeo and copy/paste the link here?
I've had best results in mixing about 5millitters or one teaspoon in four cans of soft cat food but I have more than ten cats , if you only have one cat give it 1 milliliter per can of food and give it at least once daily during a feeding at one time. I give it to mine to keep them from catching a respiratory infection as you know multi cat homes tend to have respiratory infection spread from cat to cat in them home. I keep it on hand and give it to mine everyday with their breakfast meal , they couldn't be happier. They are full of life, happy and healthy. .
