Dust Bath containers

Chicks start dustbathing within a week or so of hatching. It's natural and deeply embedded in their instincts. Anything will work even a pile in the floor.. they will make it work.

I alternate what goes into my dusting piles for both the cooped & free range chickens. Including mite powder, fresh sand, used flower pot dirt, DE when we have it, and fire pit ashes.

I use an old tractor tire filled with creek sand and wood ashes.

I use an old kids wagon that I found and had slight rust damage. I just repainted it with some water proofing paint and took off the wheels. the wheel attachements made premaid drainage holes its realy cheap if you can find one at a garage sale or in the garbage theres nothing wrong with dumpster diving lol

I just dump a big pile of dirt/sand in a couple of places in the run, and as someone else mentioned, they had their way with it. Loved it! When it got pretty evened out I then mixed in some DE. They also make their own spots wherever thay want.
I do have a question about this winter though. I live in southeast Texas, so we don't have harsh winters, but do you think I should supply them with some kind of dusting box in the coop? In case we have rain and really cold weather.
