A couple of my 2.5 week-old chicks are trying to dust bath in the wood shavings. Today, one of my leghorns got herself fairly messed up trying to dust bath in the wet feed dish (it is a flat dish that I give for about 10 min. then take away). Would it be okay to give them some native dry soil mixed with wood ash to bath in? I put a pan in there for just a minute and the first bird in started to pick at and possible eat it. I can quit giving the wet feed on a plate, but would a dust bath be a good idea since they seem to be craving it.
