I have an old tractor tire that I would like to turn into a dust bath. The problem is, I have tried this before, and can't seem to compete with dirty shavings. What are chickens' favorite dusting materials? How do you get them to use a dust bath?

Thank you! So herbs, too? I'll try that.Hello, Great idea for a dust bath area! Well... Let see... You can use dry herbs with dirt from a non-clay spot. Dried herbs can be almost anything.
I don't use DE nor suggest it... But if you think it will work you can try that. (It's up to you). I wish you the best of luck, hope this helps! I am no expert though!!

I though I read somewhere that they like sand mixed in, but I'm not sure how much. I don't have sand, but I have turkey grit that we use on our driveway. Is it too big?
About the only mint I have around here is catmint, and it appears to be dying. Cats turned their noses up at it of course.Hm... Yes, the herbs work great. If you have mint in it,
it can help reduce parasites. I am not quite sure about turkey grit...
It might just work. We shall see what other folks say!

I read somewhere that you can use wood ash. Does that keep the bugs off? Does it stain?
It will most likely work for the parasites. I never used it before but a majority of my friends do. Maybe it will work. Have you ever thought/heard of the book by Lisa Steele?
Fresh Eggs Daily? It has a bunch of things/ideas for a sand bath.
