Dust Bath?

Wondering if a sand with some diatomaceous earth mixed in works for a dust bath for our small 4 chicken flock? TIA!

Dirt is best because it is more natural. Sand and DE will work too though.

Mine prefer raised bed garden soil in a grow bag. All future grow bags will be moved to the fenced in garden

Do you have any wood ash you can add to the sand?

Sand is coarse and scratchy and a lot of chickens don't like the texture. They may or may not use a sand dust bath (mine refuse to). Regular dirt has a finer, softer texture that they like better. Mine go absolutely crazy for peat moss! You can do a combination of several materials, and sand can be one of them, as long as it's not the only or primary component.
