Dust Bath

When will they realize that it is a dust bath and not a tray of appetizing grit? 100% River Sand only. Can they eat too much? Should I be concerned? 3 week old chicks.

They are too young to dust bathe yet, also sand isn't good medium for dust bathes.

Interesting that you say they are too young because that is exactly what they are trying to do in the bedding. This is why I was looking into a dust bath for them. I don't want them trying to dust bathe in bedding that has particles of poop in it.

Maybe should I rephrase it to "they really don't need it yet"

Try a different substrate, i.e. plain topsoil? Sometimes chicks like gorging on sand in particular, don't know why.
