What is the best way to dust chickens? I keep DE in their nesting boxes and throughout the coop in the shavings, but was curious to find out the best way to dust?

I see 3 methods posted most often

1- put the dust in the dustbathing area

2- Put the dust in a bag. Insert bird up to the neck. Hold bag around neck and shake the dust over and around the bird.

3- Put the dust in the toe of hose. Use it like a powder puff, paying attention to vent, and under the wings.

Thanks a million. I like the hose method!

Uh-oh...second guessing myself as to whether we did a good job dusting our girls 3 weeks ago....my daughter and I had an assembly line going to head off what appeared to be some mite issues. She'd catch the pullet, I'd take the legs firmly and hold her upside down, my daughter took over the bird holding and I'd shake the dust all over, working it into her feathers, especially under the wings and the vent area. Hmm...what do you other folks with experince think? Should we try another way?

Delcochix, I recommend you redust your chickens to kill any eggs that have hatched since your first dusting. Normally I redust on the 10th day. Two things recommended from me; redust asap and use Imp's #2 method. Good luck.
