Dutch Bantams Breed Thread

My dutch always start laying at 5-6 months old. My problem is that my birds are freeranging now, so the daily egg hunt is needed to find those tiny holes they like to get into to make their nests.

Thanks for the info. I think mine are around 4 months now (I didn't hatch them). They're just out of the really ugly phase and starting to get some big girl feathers. These are my first chickens and I'm really enjoying them.

Here's my next dumb question. My bantams like to cuddle together to sleep. Most nights they all sleep in a nesting box together, but sometimes they'll sleep somewhere else. Wherever they are they cuddle up, even if it's on the roost. Is this something they outgrow or is it a bantam thing? It's very cute. Just curious.

My roommate chased away a raccoon tonight. Grrrr.

Well, if they're young, that's very expected. After they "hit puberty," so to speak, sometimes they'll stop it. Some of my bantams like clumping up, though. My standard cochins do it too, it's just too funny!

Those are beautiful little girls, Willowbranchfarm!

I've started my first crossing to try to bring the lavender and light brown colors together. Isabel Light Brown? It should be a pretty, porcelain-toned version of LB. Either way, the splits are cute. I've hatched out 2 so far... :)

Where did you get the dutch girls? My cream light brown girl passed away and things are not the same without her. I am desperately trying g to find another one and hate the thought of waiting until next spring. Any age would do but o would love to hand raise one again (from a chick not egg).

Hey there folks, just wandering if anyone knows where i might be able to get some black dutch bantams and also a BCLB cockerel/rooster.
I have currently both CLB's and BCLB's, just need to add some new "genes" with my breeding with the blue's and CLB's.

Also, i ordered eggs a few months back, sadley only one out of the bunch made it through, a black cockerel. a handsome little guy he is turning out to be.

I just picked these guys up today the lady said she got them from Ideal Hatchery Can I get some over all opinions on them. I have never had Dutch before so not sure what to look for.. thanks

Idohobird - looks like you have a trio of silver, a pair of redwing blackbreasted, and a pair of Cream light brown. Nice birds - at the age they seem to be, thier feathers will and have started to turn and by 5 monthsto six the cockerels should be in full plumage. Pullets start to lay about 5 months.

rsleghornchicki - They are actually very nice birds. if you spend time with them they do become very tame. i have a couple rooster that will come over to me, one will fly up to arm the other i can pick up - both will crow several time while perched on arm. The hens are broody and are excellent mothers. Also i find when i incubate the eggs, the chicks are always tamer and easier to handle.
any chicken/bird will be skiddish at first. Here in the states Light Browns seem to be the prominante color then blue cream light brown, blacks, blues and millies. Over seas they come in mcuh more greater colors.

Currently the dutch bantam society web site is under contruction. when it is up check there for a national breeder directory. http://dutch bantamsociety.org

Please note if you ever order from hatchery, they claim pure bred poultry, but in the dutch breed you'll will see and hear they question a pure dutch from any hatchery. it took me almost 8 months to get my first quad, have never ordered from any hatchery. i have had adult birds shipped across country with no problems.
