Dutch Handles First Hawk Attack..No Losses

Guess the hawk made another fly-by later when the birds were safely in the pen. We heard the big commotion and there was not one bird in sight outside. They were all in the coop, including the 11 week olds in the Firetower coop-they were safe anyway since their pen is covered. Zane, Dutch, Mace and Suede were all alarming and kept it up for about 30 minutes.

All right Dutch! Good Roo you have there!

I can't believe it because I just had the same thing happen about 2 hours ago. I was in the house and Mr. Roo went off. Sounded different somehow, but got my attention. I jumped up and looked out the window before I ran out the door and there was this big bird flying low down the driveway out back! Not sure what it was just assuming it was a hawk.

Mr. Roo stood there in the yard with me for probably 20 minutes watching the sky for it to come back. We we're ready for it this time. It hasn't came back yet though. I sure hope it doesn't! I also had to do the head count. Everyone is here. So glad yours are too!

I'm sure glad Dutch was on the ball there, Cyn!

It's nice to hear that Zane was doing his part to add to the alarm, too.

Go Dutch! You're making your daddy rooster proud!

Gloria, guess we both got lucky in the rooster dept! Glad you didn't have any losses, either. We've had hawk scares several times, but not since Dutch was in charge around here. I remember once a hawk sailing after one of my guineas, who flew under the deck of the house behind the woodpile. And once when DH and I were standing out in the yard among the chickens, a young hawk flew right into the big satellite dish-thunk! He shook it off and flew away before we could get to him, though. You never know what kind of rooster you have till he's tested, I guess.

We've been pretty lucky, too. We've had 2 hawks fly in and come out empty-taloned each time. Once, my DH was standing right in the middle of the yard and it almost buzzed his head!

Glad everybody is safe and sound!!

(I thought counting 27 chickens was hard...)
