Dwarf Tapeworms

YUCKERS: Yes. There have been some BYC'ers on here who have posted pics of one of their eggs when cracked open had a worm in it. One BYC'er only used DE to deworm. Thanks for that info!

Today I think they ARE grateful and feeling much better -- at least no more cold wings treatment towards me!

Yes, you did mention Praziquantel to me a few posts back. And that of course is the quick fix injection for the tapeworms. Vet said he'd give me the Pyrantel pamoate for general worming in future which would take care of other worms and I could do it myself, put on bread. Looks like there are variations, mixes, and as you've told me, lots of other meds one can use and looks like there's a lot I can do/use.

Here's a blurb I found about Pyrantel pamoate: Pyrantel pamoate (under US Pharmacopoeia) or Pyrantel Embonate (under European Pharmacopoeia), is used as a deworming agent in the treatment of hookworms (all species) and roundworms (Parascaris equorum, aka ascarids in humans) in domesticated animals such as horses, cattle, sheep, pigs, cats, dogs, and many other species. It is a combination of pyrantel and pamoic acid. Some drug companies pair pyrantel pamoate with praziquantel for tapeworms, and sometimes febantel for whipworms in order to provide more complete treatment for intestinal parasites in one dose. It is also used for pinworm treatment for humans in many brands, including "Reese's Pinworm Medicine", "Pin-X", "Pin-Rid", "Combantrin", "Anthel", "Helmintox", "Helmex". Pyrantel pamoate is also commonly included in monthly administered chewable heartworm tablets for cats and dogs.

Double yuck from me re MotherJean's comment about worms getting into eggs! My vet seemed to think there was little chance of worms getting into the eggs and said we could eat all eggs laid up till last night's injections -- and now, after injections, only discard a couple days' worth before they would be good again. But it sounds like it certainly can and has happened -- really want to check out those eggs once cracked open!

By the way, I told vet I put DE in their food and wondered his opinion on that helping with parasites -- he wasn't a believer and said he only thought there was value in using the DE environmentally in and around coop area to dry out and help keep bugs and parasites away. He certainly wouldn't count on it to deworm. So that's his opinion, and I know there are lots of folks that will disagree with him. I haven't a clue but will cover my bases and continue to toss it in the feed as well as the pine shavings!
