DYED Easter Chicks???

Quote:
I would try it too sometime! Food dye wont hurt anything...

But i wouldnt inject the dye into the egg like some folks do.... theres no need to... just rub some dye right on the chicks feathers..

Yes, if you feel you want to try it, please only use food coloring. And do not inject it into the egg.

Putting food dye on the fuzz should not hurt the chicks and also will wear off. You would not even have to use the food coloring full strength. Just a bit on water will give plenty of color. You can get about any color you would want from food coloring. If the red, yellow, blue, etc of the colors that come in the box are not ok, them mix them: red and yellow for orange. Yellow and blue for green. Red and Blue for purple. And any variation of any color can be made by mixing the basic colors.

Can you eat them after the food coloring?

Careful check your state's laws and animal cruelty laws, in FL its illegal to buy/sell colored animals.

Florida Laws: FL Statutes - Title XLVI Crimes Section 828.02 Definitions.

Legal Research Home > Florida Lawyer > Crimes > Florida Laws: FL Statutes - Title XLVI Crimes Section 828.02 Definitions.

828.161 Prohibiting artificial coloring and sale of certain animals and fowls; construction.

(1) It is unlawful for any person to dye or color artificially any animal or fowl, including but not limited to rabbits, baby chickens, and ducklings, or to bring any dyed or colored animal or fowl into this state.

(2) It is unlawful for any person to sell, offer for sale, or give away as merchandising premiums, baby chickens, ducklings, or other fowl under 4 weeks of age or rabbits under 2 months of age to be used as pets, toys or retail premiums.

(3) This section shall not be construed to apply to any animal or fowl, including but not limited to rabbits, baby chickens, and ducklings to be used or raised for agricultural purposes by persons with proper facilities to care for them or for poultry or livestock exhibitions.

(4) Any person violating the provisions of this section shall, upon conviction, be guilty of a misdemeanor of the second degree, punishable as provided in s. 775.082 or s. 775.083.

History.--s. 1, ch. 67-177; s. 953, ch. 71-136.

Magicians in FL I think can get special permission if infact the animals are only colored (not dyed) for two nights (Example: compleatly washable)

I know in Louisiana and Mississippi also it is illegal to artificially
dye or color baby chicks for sale. Unfortunately I don't think
that it is actually enforced since there are still places that you can go
buy the colored chicks around Easter time for the kiddies. Also
a seller is not supposed to sell under 8 chicks at a time.
Neither law was put into place because it is harmful to the chicks. They
were put in place to keep people from buying live "Easter toys" for their
kids and then discarding them later on.

Ok this is off topic but could I do this in maybe a bright orange or red color on a polish? Not for fun purposes. Just paint a bit on the top knot so I can find the buggers. I have some that blend in too much and refuse to come in at night so I am out in the middle of the night with a flashlight trying to find where the little buggers perched. A nice bright color or heck if I could find glow in the dark.

On topic I would not be opposed to a little one having a bit of food color painted on them. Not thrilled with injecting dye into an egg. Not thrilled with anyone not taking care of the chicks properly either. I think my main issue is many will buy them for easter and then the poor thing died because it is forgotten. A bit depressing. I personally would color a couple of my own chickies for the kids. Heck I would dress up the geese for easter too. But we are keeping ours and they would already have a home after easter so I guess thats the difference. I don't like Christmas puppies either so.....

which in the end is harmful to chicks - also along time ago people would color dogs or horses (Gram (grandmother) did this once) to receive full-blooded paperwork or paperwork saying there are no faults with the animals- those were natural colors like shoe polish to a white spot on a thoroughbred horse...

these some of these people would breed the animals that had a fault or sell the animal with a fault to someone else then wash their hands of the sale...

"Well he must'a known its not pure Labrador with those three white spots..."

also some people are dumb and think food colored chicks will stay that way forever...

Don't bring your artificially colored dog or cat to FL ((ya know red or purple, blue stripes, yellow triangles, flag print)), they do enforce this here (especially at Easter) ... natural colored dyes will go noticed... (still illegal tho-))

Yes it specifically allows for livestock to be marked:
(3) This section shall not be construed to apply to any animal or fowl, including but not limited to rabbits, baby chickens, and ducklings to be used or raised for agricultural purposes by persons with proper facilities to care for them or for poultry or livestock exhibitions.

Yes, I agree with you on that all the way. It's the end results that are harmful, after the parents realize that chicks grow up to
be chickens and they are not as cute so they get dumped.
Years ago when I was a kid, my grandfather had a registered angus cow (worth a good deal of money in the 70's) stolen.
After a week or so the thiefs took her to the sale barn to sell and had taken the black paste type shoe polish and filled up her brand
so nobody could see the brand. The man from the brand commission just happened to slap the cow on her hip as she walked by and
he ended up with a black hand and we got our cow back. So I guess people use artificial coloring for all kinds of purposes.
