I totally wanted to dye some chicks, not to sell just to see... O well. I can still see everyone elses pictures!!

Just wanted to add what Ohio law says, not saying I don't want to do this :) I can just imagine tiny little banties all died neon colors.

I read somewhere that those laws are all meant for dyeing chicks after they have hatched, dyeing a chicken embryo before it has hatched is not illegal. It has to do with the definition of an embryo is not considered a live chicken until it hatches.

ok first do not put alcohol or iodine on the egg. it could seep through the pores on egg and eat the good bacteria not to mention iodine with dye every thing red. I do not suggest you do this to the egg, as suggested before, creating the hole allows bacteria to settle in. i lost two eggs two bacteria and one had a perfect bay in it but the hens accidentally put a wee bit of a dent in it. no holes or parted fractures. i would say it is best to wait until after babies are born and gently cover them in food coloring and then wait for 2 minutes and rinse. keep babies warm at all times though and good luck ; )

I just heard of this the other day, I haven't ever seen it and agree with an earlier post...would be too afraid to try. good luck.

A few weeks ago my friend in Pakistan bought 30 dyed chicks and they all died. But I'm not sure if it was the dye or if maybe he was not set up properly for them. They were cute though. They had a really florescent green that was really pretty!
I'm trying to coach him on getting into poultry production there but I'm having to learn as I go myself. I told him we could just learn together. I am hoping he has good luck with it because they really do need the eggs and meat to eat.

i personally suggest getting a cohin of any kind be it bantam or not cause those things hatch eggs ALL THE TIME even if they are NOT thier eggs!! they are the mega mother bird ; ) and LOVE their babies... my cochin was killed a few days ago but she had hatched about 10 babies none of them were hers and i still have three of them she raised... unfortunatly she still had asmall one when she died, the baby is doing alright but is sad and callin for mama :(.. but those are excellent mothers in general.
