Dying Chicks... now 3 (no 6) are dead. Whats going on?

NO, dont blame yourself. I only was wondering if that was it. If you think you have identified it, then what ever was the cause, wont happen again. Its a learning process.

Please don't feel bad.

Thanks to everyone who helped me solve it and helped me feel better. I still love my chicks that are left and I'm actually just about to post pictures. It will always be a learning experience... and I'm glad I now know how to take care of my babies.

Rain, as others have said, don't beat yourself up over the loss of your babies, and certainly don't blame yourself! You had smarts enough to come here and ask for help. Had you done nothing at all, then I would say yes, kick yourself and kick yourself real hard! But the fact that you have been trying so hard to save every single one of them speaks volumes about your integrity as a chicken momma!

It's true: We really do all make mistakes. The difference is in whether you learn from those mistakes or not. You obviously have! So, please, stop beating yourself up over it.

Now, run along and enjoy the chicks that you do have, and always remember: Here at BYC, you have people who care, and people who usually know what to do, and joyfully, they're all wrapped up in the same people!

Oh, and when you get a moment, post some pics of your little goobers! We always love to see the babies!!

I have had very recent experience of the same thing with bantam chicks from Ideal. Last week my friend received her shipment and out of 6 or 7 bantams she has one left after just a few days. I received my 7 bantams on Friday (shipped last Wednesday) and have lost 2 already. Mine are under broody hens. It seems that they are fine and then later you find them laying on their sides opening and closing their beaks. We are in California so it is not super-cold, but the bantams seem to have a hard time. Standard size chicks in the same shipment are fine.

I was wondering if we all just got a bad batch. Maybe too early in the season?? The Porcelain d'Uccles that I had ordered were not sent at all as they said they didn't hatch. And they sent one short on each of two of the other breeds, so I am down to only 1 d'Anvers, 2 Light Brahmas and 2 Ameraucaunas. What are the chances I will get a hen of each:rolleyes:

So, don't feel bad. We always buy a couple extra because with chicks, stuff happens. The bantams are so small it is hard to believe that any of them will make it. So enjoy your chicks and start planning your next order

Turns out it wasn't the straw after all. Just lost my weakling, the last Brahma. I think I'm not going to try to raise Bantams anymore... they are just so dainty.

I have also had a problem before from Ideal last year. The bantams I ordered appeared fine and healthy then just started dropping one by one. Jackrooster also recently had an issue. Here is the thread we discussed it on.

Sorry for your losses:(, Ideal will replace them for you when you talk to them, they did for me without any trouble for free and I didn't have any trouble with the next several batches I ordered. Don't give up on the bantys, they are awesome.
