I have lost 2 of my ducks in the last 5 days :( I couldn't figure out what was taking them. They do free range and have started crossing the road kiddie korner to our property to the swamp/pond that is right on the otherside of the road ( luckily we live in the middle of know where so cars barely pass and if they do its our neighbors and they all love to look and stop for the ducks)

Well today at about 5 pm I hear our 2 pugs going wild and my female pug Belle was running across the road which she never does cause she knows she will get in trouble leaving the property. So I run out quickly and sure enough I can see a huge Bald Eagle in the swamp on one of my Pekins. I give my dogs lots of props for being so brave as they could have easily gotten hurt by this male eagle! But they went running into the swamp snapping at the eagle which got it to release the duck which swam away and the eagle flew to the neighbors cornfield where my pugs both chased the thing till it was in the sky leaving!

I got my ducks out of the swamp not the easiest thing to do with scared ducks. My pekin has some wounds but nothing that wont heal nicely! I am so glad for my dogs! I love my ducks and hate losing them, we moved there shelter up to the house and gave them to kiddie pools I am praying this will stop them from going 1/2 mile to the swamp!!

It's a big decision to choose free ranging, knowing that while they get to forage and exercise, they are at increased risk. We all manage risk differently.

I tend to keep my runners close at hand, as we have so many predators around, including roaming domestic dogs and cats.

Hope the injured Pekin recovers quickly and well.

Thanks, it is a risk I do know that, but I choose it because they tend to be much happier. I have had these ducks for almost 4 years and this is the first issue with predators we have come across. I am guessing it is all due to them going to this swamp. I am going to work hard on chasing them out of there. And hoping the longer distance and easier access to a "pond" will get them to stop going,

But now I can see them right out the window and the eagles wont come that close with the dogs.
