Thats why the (shut up) is part of the SSS, Strickly a theoretical Idea. I myself would NEVER ever shoot a poor endangered animal trying to make an honest living by eating my egglayin, dumplin makin, entertainin feathered friends.

I've personally got no problem taking care of coons, possums, etc. but have a hard time thinking about dispatching hawks / eagles... especially one that is "the national bird and symbol of the United States" (per wikipedia).

For fun I asked my wife and she and I would both be willing to "donate" any one of our chickens or two to have a bald eagle hanging around our property.

Nifty - I guess I should take my foot out of my mouth now..... Personally in would never ever think of shooting a Bald Eagle... something is just not right with that!!!! But then again, we do not have any of them around here. I guess I was just thinking of other breeds besides them. When we lived in Washington state, I would get the kids in the car, and would drive up to where we knew the nests were and just picnic and watch them for hours... they are such lovely birds!!!

So sorry for not thinking before I wrote!!!

We had a few here before Rita hit. Don't think anyone would relish the idea of eliminating "the symbol of the USA". I personally keep the birds protected from the air as well as from the ground. However I would like to hear the views of some folks up North where they are plentiful. Have seen a lot of them in North Central US. One might have to sacrifice more than a few(chickens) if there were several Bald Eagles making a living around the farm.

Would that be something akin to an unfunded mandate? `Chookmaceration' without representation? Or is there a `charitable giving' schedule the IRS doesn't have listed on their site?

Rubbing one out is $10K/10yr. beef with Uncle `Sugar'. As I've mentioned before: Guess no one will rush down to turn his/herself in if one strikes their windshield...

I'm with Dr. Franklin:

Plenty of birdnetting or be looking down into the barrel of some `federale' `fun'.

I have no idea about the law in Wy., but here in Ca. if a bear is threating you or your livestock, KILL IT. With a bald eagle it is even illegal to posses a feather off it.

As for that bear, I had some of the bacon I make from him just this morning. Mighty fine eats.

Eagles are so plentiful around here there called dumpster chickens. its hard to think of them as the national bird while there holding McDonalds wrappers.
An old native guy I was working with a few years ago told me they tast like chicken. but then again he thought owls and sparrows also taste like chicken and the fin from a beluga whale is a special treat too.

I'd never thought of making bacon with bear meat. Was it a brown or black bear? I just had spaghetti with italian sausage made from a black bear I got a couple of weeks ago.

Actually that somehow seems appropriate to me!

I am surrounded by bald eagles, golden eagles, red tail hawks, marsh hawks, ossprey and turkey vultures. I've never lost a bird to anything but a Great Horned Owl. In general, the eagles will always go for the seafood first, which is in great abundance. I guess if I were to lose a bird to them, it would be a small price to pay for living somewhere so beautiful.

I've got a few bald eagles, a few owls of various sorts and, quite literally, a billion red-tailed hawks in my area. If an eagle wants to come and dine on my birds, I guess I'll have to let him. As far as the hawks...let's just say there have already been a few that have had heart attacks in my area. Apparently, loud noises scare them to death.
