Ear wax? Ear Pus? How to treat.

Looks like an ear infection to me. I've treated birds with this. Hold warm wet compresses to his ears to get the gunk to soften up enough to remove. You may have to use a toothpick to gently pick it out of his ears. It will be a hardened plug. Once his ears are open, rinse them with either some warm betadine water or some hydrogen perioxide. Finally, pack the ears with Neosporin. He should be o.k. after that. I never give antibiotics, I find they are great healers on their own.

While you are working on him, open his mouth and check the roof of the mouth. There's a deep slit in the roof of the mouth. If/when they get respiratory infections, that slit also fills up with gunk from the drainage of the nose/eyes/ears. Once it stops up, the nose/eyes/ears back up. If it needs to be cleaned out, a toothpick works great there also. Then apply Neosporin there as well.

Best of luck.

If do choose to use over the counter antibiotic ointments like neosporin, make sure they are not the pain killing types. There are reports of birds having allergic reactions to the pain relief meds.

I have a special tool (stainless steel ear pick) which is a long handle with a small loop on the end. Works great for cleaning out gunky/waxy ears. If you can't get one of those, the end of a 1cc (insulin) syringe (without needle) is the perfect size to go in there & get the gunk out. Then flush w/a warm 50/50 Peroxide & water solution. Then dry the ears w/a q-tip.

Thanks everyone. I'll grab him and treat him this morning. :)

And Thank you, he is a very sweet bird. He's a bantam Columbian rock. Which before seeing him, I'd never knew existed.

I know this is a really old thread, but I'm wondering what your vet did for your rooster? My rooster has the same thing and I have no vets here with experience in birds. Help!

Hi Ruth, I know

Hi Ruth , I know this is a long ago post but if at all you can help me, I would greatly appreciate it?
I have looked everywhere online etc & you are the only one that has ever talked about how to remove a pus plug from a chickens swollen ear. My little bantam Cochin has a double ear infection & his worse side is 5 X worse than the above posted bird. It's so swollen I can not find his hole that goes inside his ear? I keep soaking the outside but can't figure out how to get inside his ear to put warm peroxide & water in so that it loosens up inside, but then again, how can I get ahold of that big plug if I don't see an opening?
Thank you, for any of your suggestions.
