Early Christmas present

So I admit to being hopelessly idiotic on this topic

Yes, the "winter" fact is highly noticeable as I am trudging through the cold and mud to check the bird house for eggs at 6 pm and 8:30 pm every night. Also the "dark" part, the "muddy" part, and the "shivering in my jacket" part.

If I were smart, I'd just leave them there, collect them in the morning when I go out to feed, and put them straight into the fridge.

Here is an option for you. After she lays six eggs make a nest in the coop in the corner out of the way and pile about eight chicken eggs in it. If she keeps laying keep taking the pea eggs from her, and when she decides to set and has for a few days, swap out the chicken eggs with the pea eggs.

You don't have to worry about incubating or taking care of the peachicks, providing there are any...

Well, it's a good idea... they sell those fake eggs at Murray McMurray. I need to get some anyway in case the chickens ever start laying again, they need to bang their beaks hard a few times and quit eating 'em!

The hen actually was sitting on her last batch of eggs late in the summer/early fall (there were two eggs), and she got one of them pretty far along before either she or it quit. By the time I noticed, it was too late to try the incubator. She's still very young, won't be three until June/July time frame. I kept finding two eggs about every month or two over the summer. Do you see the theme here?

Hey, how cold can an egg get and still be viable? Does anyone know?

Goodness, I have NO idea. That is one of the reasons I didn't think my last batch would do anything. Princess was SO cavalier about sitting on them and I think I remember her even abandoning the nest one or two overnights!!!
:th

It was getting quite cold at night!!!!
