Crossing the Road
Well I thought I would update this post now that they have started laying eggs! I contacted the breeder today and she confirmed what I was starting to wonder…they are not barnyard mixes after all. She has been working on a couple of projects…and she didn’t realize they were all from one of her roosters in the project. Guessing the Cochin mom was a surrogate? Just wanted babies to care for? So here they are with what the breeder says they are -
The mauve Orpington was indeed a pullet, but the breeder said she is probably one of her project mauve Marans
The splash is also a pullet, and the breeder said she is most likely a project maybe splash Marans…said the thin amount of leg feathers is something she is working to phase out.
The self blue Ameraucanas were NOT pullets, but cockerels. But they are both amazing boys!
The blue frizzled Cochin…is likely a blue frizzled Marans. She lays very beautiful dark brown eggs that do not look mixed at all, they look very much Marans.
And the last pullet from the pictures above is the black and yellow chick right below the frizzle. She looks to be a quality BCM lady and lays a slightly lighter colored Marans egg.
So there ya go! I wanted blue, green or pink eggs…and I am getting brown and darker brown instead The mauve Marans hasn’t laid yet, but the breeder said she might lay an egg with a bloom that makes the egg rather purple—so that’s potentially fun anyway :-D I love them all, but not gonna lie, I’m a bit bummed I didn’t get more egg color diversity!
