Well - it's not a surprise.. we have hatched a total of 6 chicks so far (between days 17 and 18) and we were woken up again at 2:45am when a chick hatched last night!

We put chicks 2-4 under our Broody Momma at 5 am this morning - all is well with them, here is a picture I just took at 3pm when they were all enjoying some of our leftover Carrot soup!

All the chicks that hatched are Buckeyes.. my Unscientific opinion is that we have 2 boys and 4 girls so far (we hatched some last summer and all the boys had distinct stripes down their heads/backs while the girls had solid yellowish heads) and our 1st hatched we are calling "him" Spartacus - is really a dominate little guy! He keeps standing tall and looking deeply at Momma, then pecks at her face - HARD! She even pulls away from him when he jumps up at her face now.

Cute little babies there! Mine are due in 9 days. I can't wait to see them!

Today's Update... We successfully hatched 18 chicks, #19 didn't go so well

Sadly, I noticed a lot of pink fluid in the shell when it was hatching and after it pushed out of the shell there was some "inside-parts" hanging outside the little chick.. it was really small and struggling - it was a hard decision but it had to be made.

Also we had some baby-momma drama yesterday. Maggie is a very young hen (about 9 months old) she was broody and sitting on 9 eggs - we put our incubator hatched chicks under her at night.. when her first egg hatched she acted like there was an alien in her nest and she took her babies and left the nest and stood in the opposite corner (of her nursery/brooding area) I luckily noticed the drama and realized that the hatching baby (and other eggs that could potentially hatch) would surely die without my intervention - so I grabbed the 1/2 hatched chick and ran it back to the house into the incubator. The chick hatched successfully. I then returned for the rest of the eggs - one had an open PIP - which also hatched successfully. Despite her insanity - she is doing great and has 14 chicks with her now. We also have a brooding light in the nursery incase there is too many babies and not enough momma-warmth.

We have 4 chicks in the incubator that hatched earlier today that will go out with Maggie-Momma after dark tonight and 2 eggs PIP right now..
