Easter Egger club!

Thank goodness. My EE finally started squatting the past two days! Maybe now she's 30 weeks old, she'll finally start paying rent.

Can someone explain this, please? Do they squat just any time or when you are close to them or when the rooster is near? I have six pullets and I am interested in knowing what signs to watch for. Two of them have developed very red combs but no extra eggs that I can find. And I'm looking, lol.

I think it is when you go near them!! My hens normally squat for roo's also that could also be an indication!!

Some of my hens squat for me, and some of them never do. It depends on the hen. Personally I don't think the presence or lack of squatting is a good indication of when they are laying. It can be with some pullets, but it isn't true in every case.

Yeah...I thin listen to @ochochicas
!! She has better experience....

I think it's a good indicator for pullets at point of lay. For older birds on a laying cycle, it's not as important. For me, squatting is a sign that my pullet is FINALLY getting on board!

And then there is the hen in my Avatar pic. She squats and lets the rooster breed her. She'll be 10 months old this weekend and has NEVER laid an egg. It looks like she just wants to be a pet chicken. LOL

Yes, I agree. Mine never squat for me, and they have all started to lay pretty early.

When I got my first trio of easter eggers, one laid greenish blue eggs, and the other light brown eggs. All the offspring of the later laid blue or green eggs, and 2/3 of the offspring of the brown egg layer laid brown eggs and the rest laid blue eggs. It also depends on who the father is, and whether or not he had parents with the blue egg gene.
