Hi birdman, can you keep me updated on how well the netting holds up this winter. I know you get lots of snow in your area as well as we do. I got a net in the fall but we didn't put it up because of fear that the snow load would tear it down.

I have old gill net over my run if left out in Winter it must me kept clear or snow takes it down. Here's why net needed

have you tried some bird netting? It seems fragile but it's not, i have one section that is almost 2 years ol now and still looks like new. And since it's so fine the snow doesn't build up on it. That's a big hawk, we have lots of them where i live but so far only a falcon has been giving my hens trouble.

Yes that is a juvenile goshawk one of many kinds of local Hawks. We also have bear, coyotes and other predators. I try to repurpose items when I can. I may try some flashy colored string next. The snow here is very wet most the time so it sticks to the net. Not sure about string. The net pulls down and can be retacked. I will check out bird netting though I don't want to catch the little birds. Of all the animals I most cautious of the moose. All my flock ducked into coop Even the ducks who I can't get them in at night. Ducks insist on staying in my protected run..
Enjoy the upcoming solstice as the days we'll start getting longer

I found years ago, when I had pheasants 4 inch netting would not catch snow while 2 inch netting was ruined.

The problem with 4 inch netting. well, the 4 inch web. BUT it does keep birds of prey out. It was not great with pheasants because some got caught in it an died. I have been trying to find 4 inch netting in sizes I need for here and my chickens. I think it will work well for them.

yes I will keep you posted just keep checking into my thread...and It has a five year warranty...its heavy duty 2" and I bought it from cutlersupply.com...they are from Michigan...and they have very great prices and they are fast...two days max...I stood on it when it was hung to test it out to see how strong it was and it sunk all the way to the ground and didn't break....it was only two feet off the ground for my test....and also when we had that first snow that was very wet....it built up on the netting four inches high and sunk almost a foot and a half and it was fine...I just pulled the snow thru and within an hour it was back to its original shape...tomorrow morning I will take a pic of the coop and put it up on here for you..we are currently still getting snow...we already have two inches of snow...im not worried about it...however you get what you pay for..if you buy the cheap stuff online and not the good stuff then I would only use it for the non snow months...but this stuff is no joke and I have it stapled with 3/4" staples and ziptied down there is no way possible that's coming down...
