Easter Egger club!

She is actually really sweet, and follows Jade around all day, copying her every move. I have named her "Sam" now, after the character in Green Eggs and Ham, partially because she will lay Olive-colored eggs, and partially because the character also follows the other, bigger guy around pestering him.

Wow! You won't get a purple egg that color out of an EE! I was thinking, with the right mix, I could maybe get a cross to lay eggs with a hint of pale, pale purple.

This was my understanding as well. Since EEs are just considered backyard chickens. That's why I said any of the traits but not neccessarily all of them would be present, ie. muffs or pea comb or...

One of my Ameraucana pullets from John Blehm (president of the Ameraucana breeders club) is completely clean faced so I am sure that she would be culled by a breeder since she does not qualify as a true Ameraucana with this defect (there were 2 clean faced babies in an order of 50). She would be considered an EE though. I will keep her for eggs but I doubt I will breed her either. Even with EEs folks want the cute beards and muffs and I don't plan on selling clean faced EEs. So she is a cull even for my breeding standards.

So no one has any ideas on what types of crosses I can try with my Ams?

my EE--Agnes. She is always one of the first to check out the treats! She is only 7 1/2 weeks old here:

I just had a silkie mom hatch some chicks from various eggs, green and brown, and I think one might actually be an EE/silkie cross, its smaller than the others, has extra toes and feathers on its legs, but it also looks like it has little cheek puffs like an EE chick. Whatever it is its frickin adorable. I have a big batch of eggs set to hatch this weekend with some green eggs in there, and my EE as a possible dad.

Love this thread! Thanks for starting it!

I have just the two EE pullets, Esther and Sonic. I SO want many more of them! They're such lovely little birds and their personalities can't be beat. So friendly and curious about EVERYTHING!!

They're great company whenever I'm outside, working in the garden or on my flower beds. Esther and Sonic are both just shy of 16 weeks old now and are already showing signs of being curious about the nest boxes for something other than roosting in. I just know they're both going to be great little layers!

Which brings me to a question: On average, at what age do EE pullets start laying? These are my first EE's, but Great Spirit willing, won't be my last! Just wait till next year!

I hope to cross them with a couple of my completely muttified roos and see what comes of it!!

It should be interesting to say the least!

Sorry, no current pictures of Esther and Sonic specifically. I'll try to get those early next week for ya. My weekend is booked up solid with other things I'd rather NOT be doing. I'd RATHER spend the weekend with my chickens, TYVM!!!

Lol! Me too! Next week we are having a bunch of friends over for a BBQ- and I have a feeling I'm going to be watching all the little ones. As you would say- I would rather be spending time with my chickens!
