so my EE laid a brown egg first egg was super small lol and then the second was a bit bigger (woohoo) will they always be brown or will the color change?

Congratulations. Whatever color their first egg is, is the color they will always lay. They do not change colors. It may vary in shades a bit. But will not change color

Ok I have a question. I was told when I ordered my EE's as chicks that they should start laying at between 18-20wks. But most of what I'm reading in here, some aren't laying til well after 24wks...But then I was also reading that hatchery chicks tend to lay earlier. So I guess my question is, for those of you with girls that didn't start laying til 24wks or later, were these hatchery girls or farm girls?

Mine are 25 weeks, and no egg yet. I bought them from Cackle Hatchery. I'm getting really impatient, I can't wait to get an egg. Seems like it's taking forever.

Although your chickens are chronologically mature enough to be laying, the short hours of daylight could possibly be holding them back. Usually at least 14-hours of light are needed for egg production. You may want to do some inquiries on artificial lighting to boost the light to 14-hours per day.

I just got back from vacation, and my 25 week old hatchery bantam easter eggers had laid their first two eggs under the coop! My chicken babysitter hadn't known to check everywhere for eggs, so I even got to find them! They are sort of a light olive color. 27 and 30 grams. They were born on May 6 this year, and I have not provided any supplemental light. I live in northern California. Some kids are going through their first molt, but I haven't really noticed the easter eggers looking too raggedy... the brahma bantams are a month older, and were definitely molting.

Our two EE hens started around 24 weeks, both lay light seafoam green eggs every other day. We got ours from the local farm supply who get the chicks they sell from a hatchery. Oh yes, they were hatched the first week of April 2013.

I only have 3 EE's girls right now-Maude, Houdini, & Hawkgirl. They were born May 5th, 2013 & haven't started laying yet. I bought them from Atwoods & they get their chicks from Ideal Poultry. http://www.idealpoultry.com/

I have to admit, I'm really digging these chickens. They look like hawks. BUT, I also adore silkies and cochins. Does anyone have EEs with silkies and/or cochins? I think I just want one of each, and the rest EEs, but I also don't want murders in my coop. I only want 6 chickens total (the infamous chicken math not withstanding). I also wonder if one cochin and one silkie will be okay, or if they would be happier with similar looking buddies. Or would they even care?

I have a silkie frizzle and they all get along, I got them at the same time. We have 7 different breeds all together, 10 weeks old. No issues so far! That's her cuddled in for the night!

I have 13 chickens, 1 roo, 12 hens. I have 2 ee's and 2 silkies. They get along fine. I have a question about my silkie, she isn't laying anymore and just sits in the nesting box. I have to take her out to get her to eat. She will eat then go right back in the nesting box. Will she get out of this funk?

She is broody and will need help to snap out of it, I haven't dealt with that first hand, but heard if you keep her in a dog kennel or something uncomfortable for a few days it should break the spell
