Easter Egger club!

Should be a project, wasn't sure if small eggs/broodiness were dominant traits or how close they sit to the fluffy bits that are wanted. Genetics is fascinating stuff, it's probably a goid thing I can't have any roos where I live. ;)

I'm not sure how dominate those traits are either. I know the best way to avoid a broody is to want one, lol. I got 1 cochin,1 silkie, and 1 wyandotte because they are broody breeds....not mine.

why can't you have a roo? if it's the noise have looked into decrowing? that is how I got to have a roo.Bluedogsonly here on byc sells them and I think he has an EE listed.

City ordinance, but if it didn't crow I doubt anyone would care. I'll go give a look, but I'd really want a double carrier for an extra kick of blue since tge one EE laying so far has such a light egg.

We don't have restrictions here on roos per say. In fact, when I called my code enforcement officer, Steve, he said he doesn't care what I keep or how many as long as they're not a nuisance to the neighbors.

As far as that goes, we've got a noise ordinance type thingy that says no dogs barking incessantly after 10pm. Shouldn't be a problem since roosters don't crow in the middle of the night XD

On that subject, my silly rooster suddenly decided to start crowing. Before yesterday it was only a couple of funny squeaky swingset sounding noises first thing in the morning.
Yesterday though he crowed a couple of times to say good night to the sun as well. And today when I let them out to play in the yard he stood at the bottom fence, facing directly towards the ONE neighbor who was not too enthused with us having a rooster and started sharing his lovely song with the neighborhood.

I think he was just so overjoyed at the warm sunny weather he had to share his enthusiasm. lol!

I really hope the neighbors don't decide that they consider him a nuisance. Or I may have to look into getting him de crowed.

Where I live it specifically says no roos, and honestly I'd end up wringing the neck of any roo that woke me up at sunrise, I'm very much a night person. ;) As it is, even a partial crower would be quieter than the neighbor's dog. :p

I actually think it's a bit weird that say, a black Ameracauna crossed with a Wheaten suddenly morphs into an EE, but that seems to be the way the Ameracauna breeders want it. There's other things that I find odd about the qualifiers for the breed, which to me makes it lokk more like an exclusive club instead of an inclusive group that wants to improve a breed, and would be happy to have anyone join in as long as they aren't causing harm.

I might be way off here, but fromwhat I've seen with EE's is that as long as you're having fun and being honest, it's all good. Want to make blue layers with crests? Awesome. EE's that lay jumbo eggs? Teeny cute EE's? EE's with no beards because you like them better without? (personally I love the beards, but if there's a group that wants them then that's what they want.) I almost see EE's as more of a...Work breed. For instance take the Quarterhorse. Originally a hardy stock breed and good all around cowhorse, it's been split into different bloodlines, one of which is useless for working cows because breeders focused solely on the looks, producing an animal that breaks down by the time it's fully grown and looks more like a cow than a athletic horse, all in search of ribbons. (personally, I think any breed that has a lethal element to it needs to be severely reassessed, like Bulldogs that can't give birth without a c-section.)

Well that turned into a rant. >_< I'll definitely give your blog a read.

I absolutely agree with you. I showed dogs for many years and the breeds that have "working" and "bench" groups have actually done more harm to the breed.

That's what I love about my EEs......... It doesn't matter what they look like as long as they can do the task they were bred to do.

Breed back to a white egg layer. The blue will be dominant and should override the white. I am working on some of my green egg layers right now trying to bring up the blue in my egg basket.
