Hatched eggs from a friend. An Easter egger rooster was the dad. He was in with Easter Egger hens and a brown egg layer.

The chicks are interesting. Some have the pea comb, others have the single comb. Some of the single comb ones have ear tufts and beards, some of the pea comb ones have ear tufts. Maybe they are called muffs, not tufts. What is the difference between a muff and a tuft?

Why don't they all have ear tufts? I thought that was in the easter egger gene and they should all have them. Any thoughts?

EEs are not a breed....they can be more or less anything, though usually related at some point to blue egg layers. US Araucanas have ear tufts (which are a lethal gene) & are rumpless, Ameraucanas have muffs & beard. Both have pea combs. EEs have often been crossed to all sorts & have lost (or gained) various traits.
