Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

Three rows of peas. And it's not exactly accurate. A pullet can just as easily have three rows.

Ok, here's my problem. When you (not you, but in general) say "rows" that to me means if the were 3 individual lines from their nose to their head....all side by side. My chicken has one "row" and from her nose to her head, with in that "row" there are individual bumps...several of them. But I've seen people call those "bumps/pea" rows too. This is where my confusion comes is....what ROW are we talking about? Lol....and I looked at that link, but until I can get some clarification...it didn't do Anything for me, sorry. Cause everyone is referring to each identify mark as a ROW....
I "think" my chicken has one Row comb with 3 or 4 peas....

In general an EE pullet's comb would stay flat much longer... My EE's combs that developed into pullets always had flat combs until much later. One way you can tell it's a girl early on (and not always the case because the boys can still develop later) is by feeling the comb around 2 weeks and if you already feel bumps it's a boy, just in my observation, but I think it's concurred... Now the EE's - that I have hatched have been trickier than the ones from a feedstore or hatchery - because some of them have "cushion" combs and some of them I keep holding out hope, even though they have combs similar to yours that stick out early on... (However the ones that had cushioned combs have turned pink sooner when boys...) But I'd say with this chick in particular you will see that the middle row is upright early on and then the sides will start to stick out as well and it's a boy- at least that has been my experience, but I'm in no way an expert... With my limited experience - it looks like my boys - for me what gives it away is the last pea on the comb closest to the forehead is erect (not flat to the face)...

To make it simpler EE boys (with pea combs) can look like "single row" breeds instead of pea combs early on...

Ok....thank you! Sheesh, I'm so confused, lol. This chicken was a rescue and I'm raising her/him as a pet, she (I'm going to keep it a girl until I know for sure, lol) lives inside. So this is ALL way new to me. I read a post about boys being more aggressive, and she has been making sure the dogs and cats know she won't put up with crap...which made me think she might be a He. If I can get some clearer pictures of the comb, can you look at them and tell me what you think....I know you think it's a boy, but I would like to be sure. Lol...and if it's a boy, can I still have him as a pet, or will he be mean? Which would break my heart. Right now she is So sweet and loving. She seeks me out and preen's next to me. I hope that her/his disposition doesn't change! Ugh...
Anyways, thank u for your help!

That's a single comb, not a pea comb at all. Looks like she might be a black sexlink, not an Easter Egger.

@Jacquieh Here are some examples of 3 rows vs 1 row pea combs from early in the thread:

The bird above has a three row pea comb. Note the three little rows of bumps or ''peas''

This bird has a single row comb ^

Single row vs three rows.

Does anyone know what ages white chicks can develop peach, orange,or brown feathers? Also does patchy refer to colors or pattern? I'm seeing some changes in a 7wk old who has been all girl so far. They aren't very clear so I don't think a photo would be helpful yet. She is also supposedly a female standard size but is the same size as my bantam ee's.

Haha! I was gonna say... That doesn't look right! Could be mixed with EE and and a single comb bird, it doesn't look like my black sex link at all... Do some already have that much red at that age? If it's a sexlink cross there is a chance it could still be a roo, right?

@Jacquieh As chickens are social animals, I think she'd do better overall if she isn't the only bird... I'd consider building a coop and adding a couple more pullets... Welcome to chicken math! haha
