Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

His comb is pretty dark and he's five weeks and he just acts different also. I also think one of my sex links is a cockerel as well. So, I may end up with 3 out of 11 chicks :-(

OK, here are two EEs that are three weeks old-ish. I'm pretty sure that they're cockerels based on color patterns. What do you all think? The black and white one also has a suspiciously upright stance.

Your first one looks just like mine at the same age. Coloring and all. Mine developed a 3 ridge comb Very early which is now starting to darken at 5 weeks. He also had very thick legs, big feet, stood upright, and just basically has an attitude. He and my other EE chick which I believe is also a Roo are now bowing up to each other. I guess to determine dominance. One is going to have to go since I only have 8 hens. Just watch for things like that.

Hard work hatching! Praying for pullets!

I just have to say that I am so thankful for this thread! I have an EE, almost 4 weeks old, that is a moose. Long, sturdy legs, rather large head, and just the largest chick I've seen that wasn't a meatie. Part emu, perhaps. She is absolutely the queen of the brooder. Without the education found here, I'd probably be convinced she was a cockerel. But, her feather pattern is looking to be silver duck wing based and absolutely female. And my goodness, I think she'll be stunning.

When I first got her (3 days old). Agnes is the chick on the right. Chipmunk striping, very dark center of the back, head is brown-red patterned.

And now at 4 weeks. Neck feathers are coming in light with black centers.

Look at these legs!

Looks like it has some Wyandotte in it. Love the lacing on the breast. Yeah, legs look thick and stance says roo, but kind of young. I can't see the comb well enough... I think it is a very pretty chick!

Oh, I'm not worried -- she's a pullet alright. Google "silver duckwing" and see what the males and females look like and you'll see what I mean. Dramatically different in coloring. As soon as the feathers came in, I knew the thick legs meant nothing other than she's a moose. And I'm sure she's got a good dose of something with a rose comb in her which is why her comb looks like a deflated balloon. Really, there isn't anything to see other than what shows in the comb closeup photo. I have another from the same source that's a grown hen now and she had a similar comb as a chick (hers was a bumpy deflated balloon. It's still weird looking and somewhere between rose and pea.
