Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

So sorry to hear that! ...I've had a few chickens taken by predators. I have a nice run for them but no matter where I put the run, they kill the grass pretty quick. And it's too heavy to always be moving around. But I like my girls to have nice fresh grass and bugs. So I let them free range. I don't feel my rooster will protect my hens. Hes a sissy. But other than that he takes great care of the hens...so now I make it a habit to only let them out when I'm around to watch.

But anyway... Roosters are fun. It's always fun to create and raise your own unique chicks :)

I have 6 hens the hawks haven't bothered, but one snatched my chick right up when I ran in the house to grab my toddler :( Mine all free range although I have kept the chicks inside since the incident. I am hoping to move the chicks into the big coop tonight or tomorrow night so that will free up some materials to make a temporary run outside until they get bigger.

Hehe I hope he doesn't end up being a sissy although I hope he is quite tame around my 2 toddlers. We handle all the chicks every day.

The "crow" this morning was so funny. Like I said I wasn't sure what the noise was, but he is trying so hard.

If it's a peachy-pink then it can be a pullet. Cockerels get a bright raspberry pink, like in your picture. The age this happens can vary, but cockerels go pink before most pullets, usually by 8 weeks or so.

Hawks are tricky to deal with. The best thing is to have lots of low shrubs and trees and places where the chickens can hide. If plantings aren't possible, you could use shade cloth stretched out between t-stakes or plywood propped up on cinder blocks. My chickens appreciate the shade and are almost always under some sort of cover.

I read about the U of A layers on BYC, of course!   :D   I only read through the first bit of the thread, just enough to understand, but was a bit put off by the tone.  Someone on my local thread got some of the eggs last year and has been hatching and sharing.  I think the offspring are coming out BBS.  The eggs are blue and look pale, but it's really hard to get accurate photos of egg color.

Sorry, can't help with the emoticons.  They appear at the top of the reply box along with other text modifiers, but I use a lap top.  The emoticons were the thing that motivated me to join BYC!   It's my only social media outlet. :yiipchick

I will look into U of A. I love breeding BBS. My favorite colors <3

I tried taking pics of my darker khaki green eggs and they come out looking like a pale green...so frustrating when u are trying to show someone egg color by pictures. Lol

I guess I need to put my WiFi hotspot on and use my computer to get on BYC...there's so many times when I want to use an emoticon and can't...grrr...they should make them available on the mobile version..

Okay great. I will check to see if it is more peachy pink.

We just bought this property last October. Right now the hens like to play in the huge lilac bush beside the house. But it is the only cover plant we have. I actually am thinking of planting some shadbush and some elderberry specifically for this reason! We are in Ohio, and I am trying to plant native plants. If you have any suggestions, they would be most welcome :)

I think I'd rather deal with hawks than coyotes. They are my problem... Sigh... So many chickens s lost tocoyotes bc I think it's fine to walk inside for a minute while they are free ranging. It's like the coyote is out in the woods watching for me to go inside so he can attack.
I really want to sit in my bedroom that overlooks the whole yard and coop area, window open, sitting in a chair, shot gun in hand, and wait for the little sucker.

I'm not familiar with native Ohio plants... I'm in Missouri. And I don't really even know my states native plants..
I know chickens tho! And will do all I can to help with them. Haha. I think any coverage would help with hawks tho. As long as they aren't easily seen and can't easily be swooped up..

I'm trying to put in things that attract bees and birds, but won't get destroyed by the chickens. There are mature fruit trees here, and the chickens love cleaning up the dropped fruit. They would love elderberries! I'm sure there are threads about this topic somewhere in the forums. Try a search?

We have woods and fields surrounding us so I have to watch for the coyotes too :( I like the shotgun idea!

How funny you are in Missouri. My dad's side of the family all live in Missouri and Illinois
