Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

He's beautiful!  What a great project.  Another EE type is always great!  :yiipchick   Hope you post pics of the chicks here.  I'd love to see how their combs develop.  Are you going to call them Super Blues?
You probably know about the University of Arkansas blue layers.  They were produced from a similar cross.

Next week I'm getting couple of Cream Legbar pullet chicks to put under a very broody hen.  I'm curious to see the quality of the blue shells compared to my EEs.

Thank you! And yes I will definetly post pics of the chicks on here. Just waiting for my other WE that are not fathered by my araucana to hatch. Then I shall stick some eggs in there...

I'm not familiar with the university of arkansas blue layers. Please tell me more! Lol.. to be honest EVERYTHING that I've learned about chickens has come from this site and my couple years of experience... I've learned sooo much from everyone on here tho. Especially when I have people that I've bought chickens from on Craigslist tell me things and I know they either don't know what they are talking about or they are just talking out their butt. Lol.

I've always wanted cream legbars. Love that u can auto sex them. But yes I've heard the same that their eggs are not that blue...if u are wanting some really pretty deep sky blue eggs I would definitely recommend an araucana hen. My araucana hen lays the most pretty blue eggs compared to my EE.

I was pretty sure this morning that my 8 week old EE was a cockerel because I thought it was trying to crow. However I have never raised baby chicks before so it could have been a different noise. Anyhoo, a friend of mine is saying female. This pic was taken at 7 weeks. Thoughts?

Unfortunately The white chick in the pic looks to be a roo. More pics could help however.

Can anyone tell me how u get emoticons to post on here? Like the hatching chicks and blue face hiding under the chair. I post everything from my phone since I do not have internet hooked up to my computer. So maybe I'm missing something bc of my phone??... Always wondered how u guys did those. All I can do is my stupid phone emoticons and they are just smiley faces and idk if you guys even see them. Lol

You're right. He's a cockerel. The comb is too large and red to be a pullet at 7 weeks.

Yes that is a rooster. Very red comb for that age. Pullets combs will not start getting red until it's time for them to start laying around 20 weeks or so

Thank you so much for your help! I am actually pretty excited. Hoping that he can at least provide some protection for my hens. One of my chicks got taken by a hawk last week :(

So sorry to hear that! ...I've had a few chickens taken by predators. I have a nice run for them but no matter where I put the run, they kill the grass pretty quick. And it's too heavy to always be moving around. But I like my girls to have nice fresh grass and bugs. So I let them free range. I don't feel my rooster will protect my hens. Hes a sissy. But other than that he takes great care of the hens...so now I make it a habit to only let them out when I'm around to watch.

But anyway... Roosters are fun. It's always fun to create and raise your own unique chicks :)

I read about the U of A layers on BYC, of course!

I only read through the first bit of the thread, just enough to understand, but was a bit put off by the tone. Someone on my local thread got some of the eggs last year and has been hatching and sharing. I think the offspring are coming out BBS. The eggs are blue and look pale, but it's really hard to get accurate photos of egg color.

Sorry, can't help with the emoticons. They appear at the top of the reply box along with other text modifiers, but I use a lap top. The emoticons were the thing that motivated me to join BYC! It's my only social media outlet.
