Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

Chick Crazy I don't know about if they are pullets or roos, but I would use paper towels in the brooder instead of newspaper. Newspaper is slippery and can cause the chicks to slip a tendon. I have a pullet that slipped a tendon and I caught it too late and it didn't heal correctly, so she limps.

5 weeks old...a rooster, right?

Hi! My chicks will be a week old tomorrow, and I know it's to early to know for sure but what gender do you think my Americana is? S/he shows signs that it might be a rooster. Like he likes to flap his wings like roosters do to show off, he's the smartest, and other things. It's suppose to be a hen.

My dad doesn't want a roo but he might get a bigger flock so we would need one.
It's way too soon to tell, but don't give up hope for a pullet. You can't tell sex based on behaviors at so young an age. Pullets will spar and flap and challenge other chicks. It's how they start working out the pecking order. Also, I found my hatchery EEs to be larger, grow faster, and be be more curious and assertive than most. Post back in a few weeks and we'll see how it looks then.

Where I live, the local feed store sells dollar bags of hay (that falls off the bales). I use that to line the box. The chicks love to peck and eat the grass seeds. I would put down a layer about 1 inch then once a day mix it up so the little poop drops to the bottom, and I put a new thin layer on top so that they don't step on poop. About 3 days or so, I dump all the hay into the compost and put down new clean hay.

Hi!

We had several broodies hatch out chicks and I have been busier than I ever imagined getting accommodations set up for everyone. Also, they are so cute, I find myself spending more time just watching them.

All Seramas, which are much easier to sex! Only one cockerel out of this group of 5, which are now 4 weeks.

Hope you enjoyed this Serama interlude. Now back to our regular programming --- All EEs, all the time!
