This is our second 10-week EE. Same issue...I think we're in the clear except that darn tail. I feel like they can't BOTH be boys since we just got 2 from the pullet bin and they both have it, but we all know life isn't fair.
The comb is similar to what I just posted....single-row pea without real redness.
How about this babe? I was thinking because It has a black head, and silver body, I had a cockerel on my hands. But at 13 weeks old I was expecting to have more color coming out on the shoulders. Sorry for the poor quality picture. This batch was raised by a broody, so it is difficult to get close enough for good pictures. It has been interesting watching this one mature. It hatched with no tail, and had a really different body shape as a chick. In fact this chick only started growing a tail about a month ago. The tail feathers are curved, but not exactly rooster-like. Thoughts?

Sorry, I can't tell much from the pic. A black head would not mean cockerel. If you do not see any color in the comb by now, perhaps a pullet. Body looks plump. Maybe some orpington in the mix. Does it have the cheeks of an EE?
That's funny, this is the second EE characteristic I've read of elsewhere that I've had debunked on this website. I read not too long ago that an EE with a black head would almost always be a cockerel. I'm new to EE's,so thank you! So glad I asked. In this case I'm a little sad. I wouldn't have minded an EE roo. The eggs were from an all EE flock, so I don't think there is any orp. But I guess you never know what could be lurking in generations past, right? The comb is slightly more red than the other EE from that hatch, but not by much. And they both have healthy beards. They other EE from that batch is jet black, very pretty.
Honestly, I've never seen an EE like yours. I think it looks good, though.
Here's a 5 week pullet with a black head.
Here she is again at 7-8 weeks old. She developed some interesting lacing but never had the cheeks. Her new owners fell in love with her & she lays now lays greenish blue eggs. (My DD hatched a lot of chicks. We could not keep all of them.)
In some EEs (ones that have a collar).... I've seen that the ones with a solid black collar grow into males and the ones with kind of a patterned (or lighter/ not solid black) collar develop into females. Of course, it may also be a trait from the roo I had.

In late spring/early summer there will be many people trying to find homes for accidental EE cockerels. If you really want a rooster, you could have your pick and likely get him for free. There will be lots of males of other breeds looking for homes too, so you would have a wide selection.
Love it if you could post an update on your black headed EE when you know for sure. I think having a dark head/neck with a light body is an unusual color combo in general. There are a couple of European breeds like that... something that starts with a V...
Wondering if anyone could help me sex this little chick. I hatched them about 4 days ago from a so called splash wheaton am and a dark buff easter egger.
