Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

The solid colors are much more challenging to ID. If you see any red come in on the wing or back, you'll know. Otherwise, you're waiting on comb growth and rooster feathers. I've seen some late bloomers that hid their gender until 5 months...

Isn't that the truth! Haha! I know they say you have a 50-50 chance.

For straight run, yes. For sexed, 90%+

Ok my girls are a little older now, what does everyone think? They are 5 1/2 weeks old.

Here are them together. On Moneypenny I see a single row of tiny peas. I don't see anything on Marigold/Marvin.

You SURE those birds are 5 1/2 weeks old? All of mine had more feathering than that at 3 weeks when they were moved to the coop in an unheated barn. It was the start of the second week of July, I did put their heat lamp facing into a big box in there the first couple of nights just in case - nervous new "father"

Hope that doesn't mean yours are boys.

They look 5.5 weeks to me--I've had some weird feathering experiences with Easter Eggers from hatcheries. My 3 week olds barely have any shoulder feathers let alone back feathers.

That being said, there is no way to tell right now on sex, it would all be guess work

Solid colors are definitely much harder.

Definitely too early! The red in this photo looks to be on the breast, which is actually more often a sign of a pullet than a cockerel. That combined with the brown partridge looking wings make me lean towards female. As it feathers out (5-8 weeks) we'll be able to give much better guesses.
X3 Plus, the chipmunk stripe on the top of the head is very defined. We had several chipmunk EE chicks and the ones with the defined head stripe were pullets. The one with more spotty head markings was a cockeral. I really think there's something to that.

I don't know that I agree.

Ancona and EE - she lays green eggs

Upper left is the other EE - she lays blue eggs.

My birds came from a local ranch, sold as white Ameraucana pullets. They were one week old when I bought them. The one I think is a boy actually has much better feathering and a different/ shorter tail than my straggly looking one.

Thank you all for your input!!!

Bruce, what color did that black and yellow chick turn into? I have one I just got that looks like her. Her whole underside is yellow as are her cheeks. Just wondering. Of course, they could grow up looking as different as night and day. Aren't EEs fun!!!!
