Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

mine seems to have a yellow neck but recently got a darker red chest and red in the wings but the neck remains light colored so does the red in the wings mean its a boy for sure? the comb still doesnt look like 3 rows or red yet at 9 weeks. I am confused about the coloring rules. thanks, lisa

Ok I've posted photos of these two at younger ages. They're now 9.5 weeks and I am all sorts of confused with them. The one I thought was a girl due to what I've read about tails and all looks more rooish now and the other one that I thought looked like a boy due to tail and legs and all looks pulletish.

Basically I have no idea! There is no other color on them but white.

This is the one that I had been previously thinking was a girl but now..... ?

Here is the one that I had previously thought was a boy. The comb is just a wee bit pinker than is showing in this photo.

So.... any ideas? Thank you

Hi kian! I'm thinking these are both pullets, but I see why you are unsure. The comb on the first looks a little strange to me and the second chick has those really long hackle feathers-- kind of looks like a chicken mane! Still think they are pullets. By 9.5 weeks a cockerel comb is usually pretty obvious. (But you never know....

Haha! It's confusing because there aren't really any 'rules'. They're more like guidelines.

Overall, this looks like a pullet to me. Smallish pale comb and the red chest are pullet features. The darker red on the wings is usually a cockerel thing, but on this chicken, it looks more a part of an overall color pattern for a pullet. Can't ever be 100% sure until they crow or lay an egg, and sometimes they can even fool you there, too. My money's on pullet for this one. Pretty, and very friendly too!

I also would guess pullet on this bird, even with the dark red, since she has a small comb and that salmon-colored breast. Here's hoping we're right!

#1 top view - pullet? has a lot of red on the wings

#2 top view - pullet

#3 top view - pullet

these are my three that are about seven weeks. i think #1 and #3 are mix with a silver laced ... something, their combs are not red and have not grown in yet.

I rely on the look of the comb to help with sexing, so hard to tell with these, but they look like pullets to me. The top one seems more brown than rusty red and its rather spread out, so thinking pullet here. Bottom one has nice pullet coloring and a small comb. The middle one also has pullet coloring, but has the largest comb of the 3. It doesn't look too pink though, but still makes me wonder. We'll see what others think.

Look like silver laced wyandoote crosses, and I see all pullets.......:D

I hadn't noticed how odd Penny's comb looked until I saw the photo. It's a little mangled huh? But then, she looks mangled all over, feather wise. She looks like she went through a blender! And of course on both of them, who knows what other breed slipped in with the supposed "Ameraucana" genes? That one little thing might make a big difference.

Thank you for your opinion!!

This was my suspected cockerel last week, about 5 weeks.

This is him (?) today. In comparing with the black one I have this looks total rooster to me. The legs are thicker too. The black one barely has a comb and it is flesh colored. The flash drowned out the color in this one a little bit in the second picture. I see no red at all on him. Both parents were Ameraucana but he has all the colors together so I would say they are Easter Eggers. Anybody else agree with cockerel or is it too early.
