I believe they are too young to tell. They are so cute! Give them until about 4-6 weeks of age until you can actually see the changes in the comb, tail and spurs.
I think you are correct and have a pretty little boy here. The last picture is a perfect example of the "3 rows of peas" that can sometimes be seen on cockerels as early as 3 weeks. In the next week or two (I'm assuming he is 4-5 weeks) the comb will turn bright pink.
Ginger is a tricky one. The reddish tones are all over and more like the brownish color of a pullet than the deep red of a cockerel. The tail looks feminine and the comb isn't developing yet. All good news. But, that reddish tone is a bit splotchy so I'd hesitate to call it a pullet with any certainty. I'd say late blooming male is a maybe. She or he is sure to be striking so even if you end up with crowing, a life with a harem is still a possibility.
Basil and Paprika are very girly.
Mine were supposed to be sexed pullets, and a lot of people are saying "boy" for Ginger...so now I'm worried about the hatchery's ability to sex them! I'd give it a go but I have no idea what I'm looking for, and even the thread on here with pics they both looked the same to me.Kangadoodle, chicks purchased from hatcheries (presumably where the feed store bought them) where they were sexed as pullets are female 90-some percent of the time. Yours are too young to say they are female by patterning but they aren't showing any male traits yet either.
Wishing4wings, thank you so much for your input. "He" is about 5 weeks old and he's so different from my other two. Unfortunately, I can not keep roosters and now that I have 2 out of my original 10 that need to find a new home. Disappointing on multiple levels, we'll find a good home for both of them. So I would love to get input on my six EEs. I *think* I ended up with five pullets and one rooster, but wanted to get some expert opinions! They are 8 weeks old today.
^This is Snow White. She's all white except for that one black feather in her tail. No pink in her comb at all really, so I am thinking pullet. I tried to get a better shot, but she was really camera shy today.![]()
^These two are Sybil and Mary... I'm thinking these are both pullets.
^This is Edith. I was sure she was a pullet until today. Up until last week her coloring was JUST like Sybil and Mary, except she had a more blonde head. Now her blond feathers are more prominent and she's making me second guess her gender! No red in her comb at all though.
^This is Carson. I'm 99% sure he is a roo.I would be happy to be wrong, but that comb of his has been bright red since like 4 weeks old. haha!
^This one is as yet unnamed because I just cannot figure out what gender s/he is! Started out like this:
and this^ was at at 5 weeks old. This one was the slowest feathering chick I had, but was also the smallest chick that I got. When I picked out my EEs this one was tiny and so dang cute I couldn't pass it up. Any ideas on this one? The black and white at first made me think boy, but after reading a LOT of this thread I started thinking girl. Now at 8 weeks, I just don't even know anymore. haha!
All are pullets except Carson and your unnamed one, I think.
