Got these as day old pullets. Now I strongly suspect the white and black one is a roo. They are 3-4 weeks old. So distraught that I have to give him up

That's too bad. It does look like a cockerel. Start watching the comb for thickening and going pink.

I'm curious about this chick I'm getting mixed opinions. Mostly cockerel and of course the two I was really looking at seem to be males. Oh well I'm sure my OEG will go broody again .

Coloring looks a lot like my pullets did at that age. Here are my two most similar pullets at 2-3 weeks, and again at 12 weeks. So I say its a girl.

Although a different color, this was my boy at the same age, much thicker legs, and feathers were coming in quite a bit slower but not didn't show color blocking until later at week 4 or so.

I would need to see a better picture of the brown ones wings, but here are my closest looking kids at that age, and again as adults, hope this helps.

The reddish chest at this point freaked me out, but now she is my first broody mama with baby chicks, lays blue-green eggs. Couldn't believe her blond went to black!



Kind of all ways knew this was a boy, but he has the same white patches as your black/white.

The 2nd picture looks just like his/her mom! I hatched 5/6 of these two ladies eggs I'm pretty sure the last one came out of the green egg which is bubbles the darker of the two.

What breed is your hen ? Mine just hatched 9/10 and she looks like your lady

I have had a few say brown leghorn mix with OEG. She laid 5 eggs then triedtogo broody. Never followed through. Then stopped laying for 3 months, started laying again 3-4 weeks and full broody !! Love her!

HI EE Experts... I have been analyzing over and over this thread to see and learn the differences between the sexes. We have 10 EE's that are now between 5-6 weeks old. I would love your help/opinion on the sexes of them.... pretty sure one of them is a roo. Thanks!

Here are two of mine that have similar traits to the two you mentioned. The girl had an almost gold color coming in, (left) so I worried about her, but the color on her brother was much more blatant orange. Also, the pattern on him looked more patchy.

So I think the first is likely a female, and the second male.
Also in your full group photo the one to the left looks like it may be male.

Thank you for your reply! I figured that the white/black one is going to be a him... The one in the group pic I should have disclosed on the far left is actually a Production Red (RIR)... not one of my EE's... I haven't even tried to figure that breed out for boys vs. girls! LOL. My hubby loves the reds and I am partial to the EE's although I just love all their fuzzy butts!

My girl is an EE, she has the green/slate legs and lays blue/green eggs. I got her from McMurray. I did wonder at first if she wasn't one of the ones you mentioned since I got a mystery chick from the hatchery and she looked different and stood taller as a chick than my other EEs but she answered my question when she started laying. Turns out my mystery chick was just another EE, which was an awesome because they are one of my favorite breeds, with Orpingtons being my other favorite. Such sweet personalities with both of the breeds!

If yours lays brown eggs maybe she is an EE that just lays brown eggs, I hear that happens sometimes, or she could be a cross? They do look like sisters though!
