Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

#1 is for sure ruler of the brooder, but is also larger then the rest. He/she makes sure it is the first to eat when I refresh the food and huddles the rest in a corner seemingly to protect them. I can not see any comb on it either. I was really hoping it was a rooster
#2 is a blue-ish color under the red so I think the feathering slower was an eye trick unless your referring to something else.

They all look like pullets to me so far. If #1 is older/bigger, it will be trying to claim top of the pecking order and eating first. If there are no physical signs of a cockerel yet, then there are not yet enough hormones flowing, and I wouldn't expect to see dramatic behavioral differences between the sexes at this point. Watch the combs in the next week for growth and pinking up, but plumage is showing 4 females.

The good news is there will soon be many unwanted roosters looking for new homes. You will have your pick and be able to get your choice for very cheap or free! Find the BYC thread for your local area and ask around. You'll hear about plenty of accidental cockerels on this thread too.

Thanks for trying to help, here are a couple head shots...hopefully they show what you need. She will be 5 weeks old tomorrow. This winter has been so mild here...we are going to have to start mowing soon LOL.
Very good pictures. With these, if you see only a single row of "peas" on the comb, they tend to turn out female. Three rows of peas tends to be male. I think she's got only a single row, and it's a good clear picture. I'm going to say pullet.

i was hoping with a pretty good pattern and lack of comb these two may be pullets? They are getting harder and harder to catch ! I'm still sitting on 9 majority cockerel I believe. A few have no comb coming up at all ! Close to 5 weeks.

5 weeks is kind of the turning point. You will know most soon. Unfortunately the flash washes out the pictures, but I think the little one above looks like a pullet. Can't really tell on the rest, but the one with a single comb under mama is suspicious. They are a little wilder when raised by a broody, but I think they end up healthier that way. Cute bunch!

Thank you I took more pictures this morning. The one with the big comb was the only RIR egg I put under her. With EE Roo I do believe it's a cockerel. It's HUGE !! Compared to the others !! I'll get a clear **** if each one on Sunday . Dad has a ton of red and black and most of the eggs came from two EE hens one who was a reddish color other yellow. We will see ... I'm hoping the one you are saying is a pullet it looks just like it's mom as a baby. Thanks again!!!
