Easter Egger Sexing "tips and tricks" *Pictures Included*

I love my feed store. They have a special chick room just for the season, and customers are not allowed to handle chicks. An employee takes them out for inspection and approval. Not 100% foolproof of course, but they do try to limit the incidence of brooder mix up and disease transfer. I avoid some other feed stores during chick days. One time saw rampant pasty butt and filthy water. You would think the chain stores would have protocol for proper care, or at least someone working there with a little knowledge and common sense.

This is the way to do it!

On delivery, chicks are not sold until the following day to give them a chance to recover from shipping.

Sounds like a good way to do it! All my local feed stores brood them in stock tanks. Who knows who's handled those chicks.

Hey, y'all!

These are my 5-6 week old EE's.
Is it possible at all to tell if they are likely pullets or cockerels at this stage.

I have 4 birds. I am pretty sure two are pullets (#3 and #4)... the other 2 I have no idea but I am hoping also pullets. (#1 and #2)

#1 (Don't know)

#1 and #2 (Don't know)

#2

#1

#3 and #4 (guessing pullets?)

#3 (pretty sure pullet)

#2 (#4 in background)

#3 and #4 (these two (girls?) are pretty much always together)

#1 surrounded but the other 3. #1 is larger than the others and I am guessing it's a cockerel.

#1 again

#3 and #4 together still...

#3

#2 and #1

So, what do you think?? Is it safe to give #3 and #4 girl names?
How 'bout #1 and #2?

Your educated guesses are much appreciated!

#1 looks like a pullet so far
#2 pretty sure is a cockerel based on feather pattern and bumpy comb shape
#3 and #4 pullets so far

1,3,4 all have fairly large combs (single combs?), and even though they all have pullet feather patterns, at 5-6 weeks, things can change rapidly. I would give them all another couple of weeks before deciding on names.

Any thoughts on these combs?

This is Dolores. I'm a tiny worried about her comb. Looks like three rows but the middle is bigger.

This is Zelda... Who acts so brave and comes up to me and was smaller tried to nip at me but her comb looks like one big line to me.

They are almost 3 weeks
Thanks!

It's still way to early to tell. Yes, cockerels usually have 3 rows, but pullets can (and often do) have them too.

Nothing is screaming rooster on any of these yet, though I'm going to guess that #3 is a cockerel with those stocky legs and pink comb. Keep an eye out, if you have a few cockerels I would expect them to start getting red patches on their wings and back at anytime. Update us in a few weeks!
