Hey guys! So, this is my first time asking questions here, and I'd like to know a simple answer about the following question: what defines a hen as an Easter Egger?
I mean, if any hen is able to lay either green or blue eggs, does it automatically make her an Easter Egger?
Thanks for answering guys!!

An easter egger is a "type", not so much a breed. Easter Eggers aren't true breeds, but rather hybrids designed to lay all colors of eggs. They are medium sized birds, not really table birds.
If you have a pure breed chicken, it cannot be an easter egger because EEs are hybrids. As well as OEs.

Hey there and :welcome!!
Yep; Easter Eggers are a 'mutt' chicken 'hybreed' (breed/hybrid). They lay a variety of egg colors, but typically blue or green. Ameraucanas---that is the only right spelling for it---and Araucanas are purebreds who were used to help create the Easter Egger. Easter Eggers, as most hybrids do, lay more eggs than the other two I just mentioned. :) And if somebody calls a blue egg layer an 'Americana' or 'Ameracuana' just know, if they can't spell it right, it's probably really an Easter Egger. There's a lot of information regarding this topic. I'm not an expert on it, but I do know that much...from research, of course. :D
Hope that helps! :thumbsup

Actually, it's a misconception that all Easter Eggers are mixed breeds, with Ameraucana ancestry. It's not true at all. Hatchery sourced Easter Eggers are not mixed at all, they just haven't been bred to meet a particular breed standard. They are more of a landrace type rather than a proper breed. Both the Araucana and Ameraucana breeds that we know today were developed from the birds that we commonly know now as Easter Eggers.
