Let me ask this. If I make a life size cutout of me will someone put me at the big rooster with the group. I don't want to be left out ya know...just don't talk me into a lot of new chickens! Unless they are cutouts too.

concerning swedish flower hens (crested).

They are a land race breed (popped up from natural selection of others in area over probably what amounted to decades or even hundreds of years) With this we really can not say that crest or no crest is a recessive gene popping up for either one. There are def. less crested, but we could hypothesize that the crest could be the next evolutionary step and will naturally take over....over time. Since many are starting to get interested in the breed, it is only a matter of time before someone tries to standardize and get recognized here or in the UK.
There seems to be no other discernible major differences with crest or not (weight, size, egg laying, body shape, waddle, comb, lobes, feet, etc.) I would hope Greenfire gets fresh stock every year for a few years though. I already see the start of these things going viral and as far as I can tell they all came from the the June 2010 shipment. That shipment was 15, but not sure of ratio of sexes. They are just selling chicks....I wish they were tracking better as to their breeding and passing that onto the buyer. If you want to breed them and get ahead of Greenfire, it would not be hard if you can grab some fresh stock someplace other than that shipment. Line breeding will be fine for now, especially because they are a land race breed....but I would already be planning on how you might be able to get fresh blood at least by the 3rd year. Also since they dont divulge the lineage of the stock you got...you could already be into inbreeding instead of line, in which case you are still safe for a while but def. want some new blood by 3rd year.

I would love to see them...will Pm you some day and see when you guys are around?

I am curious on the question of the crest being dominant or recessive. I have seen quite a few and ended up with several of my own, Polish mixes with 4 none crested breeds. Every one of the juveniles developed crests. I am still getting a grasp on chicken genetics but this is what I have from my own breeding. I had always questioned if crests where dominant.
The birds are so nice...and I don't need another breed...so tempting!

They are def. interesting. I dont need another either as I want to get a breeding program for black Java's.....unfortunately almost everyone here is pushing for the mottled

so I will have some issues finding good stock. I would have to research the crest gene in general as it applies across the board. I try and start with if it is a gene passed by the rooster or hen first and work my way in from there (like the darkness of the egg color of the Marans is actually passed from daddy). Of course the crested could also be one of those weird ones that only pops up with a certain combination from both parents; its a good starting point none the less. I never formally studied animal husbandry, but its usually the science part of things that grab my attention. My stress level would probably go way down though if I just got a bunch of sex links for the eggs and called it a day

She was a loner here, too. I guess there's something to the "birds of a feather" thing. I bought two of each breed and they really did stick together in pairs. I ordered another SS but it was DOA. Between that one and this one's eye, I can only assume whoever was working with the SS at the hatchery was more than a little rough.

I love showing my son updated pictures. He loved her best of all and named her Sweetie. I like being able to say, "See? I really meant it when I said she was going to a place where she would have more room and be happier."

I actually have a picture of you and Roo that would work perfectly!

I'll be going, but not selling this year. I'll miss you not being there to hold my hand through the process.

She is absolutely terrified of the lawn mower. My other chickens stay out of the way of my driving of course

but actually will kind of follow it around since it disturbs the bugs. I usually have a trail of chickens scratching around in the freshly mowed path behind it. This girl will instead go to the farthest point in the yard and if I get too close is freaking out trying to fly over the fence, the crazy thing.

I had similar loner behavior out of my other half blind girl. She was a loner up until she started laying and even went broody a couple times. Now she fits right in with the other hens. This girl isn't totally blind in her bad side, but definitely has some limited vision there. I think it makes her more hesitant to "make friends". But once she matures and starts laying, I think she will calm down a bit. She is finally starting to fill out and widen up too.

Glad your son gets to see her new pix. She is a nice bird, just a bit of a spaz. But she is happy as can be here, you should see her go running up the hill in the morning to get treats

I am going to Newport.....will probably have mottled cochin bantams to sell. either hens or pairs. Might have a New Hampshire pair as well.
