Terry, I too have been in a battle with some infection. It started about 3 weeks ago. Coughing, sneezing, running nose, fowl smelling stuff, raspy breath, Almost black runny poop, then a swollen eye that shuts. I put 3 down that didn't respond to anti-botics. I had 2 with swollen eyes but they bounced back. No one has the running nose anymore. But I still hear a sneeze every so often. Then I think here we go again. It didn't bother the older birds, just the 8-10 month olds. The lay rate hasn't slowed down. I have a hen broody atm and my Buffy hatched out 14 out of 15 eggs last week. Better than an incubator lol. The only one I still hear sneezing every so often is the 10 month old rooster. I held him down and his nose is clear no swelling of the face. I am puzzled over this. I did notice the coop was pretty dusty the week every one started getting sick. I cleaned it out and took the pressure washer to it. I did find a bunch of little red mites hiding under the edge of the perches. I haven't been removing them when cleaning. I do now. I also put seven dust under the hay. That, I think fixed their little red wagon! No one in the other grow out pen got sick. I lost 3 black copper maran pullets from what ever it was. In hind sight they may of bounced back if I gave them more time. I gave them 1 week in the hospital pen. They started eating and drinking again but their eyes where not opening. I made the judgement call.

By the way, I found out a blue copper maran over EE's produces all colors. The blue must not be dominate like splash. Everyone of the chicks are diffrent.

Yes the grass/weeds are a bit tall under the porch. But it is nice and shaded and cool under there. The chicken tractor fits well under there and when it is 100+ the chickens hang out under there and eat the grass/weeds.
I believe what happened to my 4 mo. old SGs was a cockerel that had turned breeding age. I caught him chasing some of the others and was a bit rough with them...so...he is in his new home with a buddy and so far so good. The chicks I still am not quite certain. I have 2 that are still not acting like they feel good and I really think with the humidity it is cocci which I have had a problem with in the past. When I cleaned the cage the last chick I had that died I did fine bloody stool and it was not until the last day it was like that. I checked one of the two this evening and it's craw was at least half full which is wonderful! It has not had much of anything in it for 2 days. So..hopefully on the medicine it will be OK...still not sure on the other chick.
Have your tried Oxine?? You would really like it and it is a good product to use when you are fighting things like what you have described. Go to Bario's page and click on his webpage link. He has all the info on it.
The coming week is going to be really humid....just adds to the problem.

Guys, I know I am very rarely on here... I need your alls help (Like how I put that in East TN Speak?)

I have kittens out my ying yang (ok more like 7) I have tamed down... the oldest ones are already spayed and neutered... the younger ones will be (on MY dime). I need to find them homes. Neighbor is literally yelling at me and I don't want him to poison or shoot the cats, the dogs, the chickens, the ducks, ect. I want GOOD homes and I knew ya'll are good animal people.

They are varying in color, they will be fixed before they go... all are going to be AMAZING mousers because their mothers are wild and bring them mice and rats and moles. They all have been 100% outdoors so far, but I have been taming them and they will easily learn to love the AC and heater in the winter. I do have them litter trained by putting a litter box on the porch.

PLEASE HELP ME!!! I will not take them to a kill shelter and the no-kills are booked out. Anyone? Need a pair for the barn? Oh, they all are used to chickens too... don't even look at them wrong. And I have chicks growing out (not fuzzy chicks, though) and they don't look at them either.

I'll make a point of checking my PMs, but it's best to reach me through facebook (Stacy Tate, Englewood, TN or Tate Poultry) or [email protected]

I know ya'll could use farm cats. Common!!!

Not to be picky, but I'm fairly certain the East Tn translation of "your alls" would be yuns as in "Can yuns help me out?"

Now mind you, my English to Appalachia is no where near fluent.

As for the cats, sorry I'm full up and the two I have cause enough trouble!

I have not heard yuns in a long time at least not since I was small. Or maybe I am just not in the right crowd. As for the kittens I too am full up. Good luck in finding good homes for them.

The sad thing Stacy is that our area is one of the most populated areas in stray dogs and cats. I use to work with a local rescue group and they have stayed at 100+ cats for almost 9 years. I myself have 14 strays show up on my farm at different intervals in one summer. I had all of them fixed..most where wild and when I let them go that was the last I saw of them but they are not procreating. I have 4 strays right now that I have got to trap.

Let me suggest putting an ad in the Knoxville paper. The fact that you have do the right thing in having them spayed/neutered before they leave is wonderful. I would never let anyone have a kitten or cat on the promise that they would get it fixed..I would either get it done and let them pick them up or if they where paying (the rescue still let me offer low cost after I had to stop volunteering) I would take them to the vet where they picked them up and paid. So...what I am saying is you would have a good chance of finding homes through the paper there.

Believe me...there are not near enough people who would take the responsibility you did in making sure these babies where fixed.

Oh....and it is also "yall".

TNBarnqueen - I think there must be a formal and informal use of 'you all'. Informal Example: Mother says to children: "Yuns get your butts in this house this instant!"
Formal Example: Guests leave house: "Ya'll drive safe!"

That has been YA'LLs English lesson for the day, stay tuned for another lesson!

LOL.... I think TECHNICALLY because it is East TN... you can write or spell whatever you want so long as the point gets accross. LOL! Yuns, Yins, you alls, ya'lls, ect ect. all would work.

I know this region is full of strays and "wild" critters. I also know I'm fighting a anti-cat culture. I have some Middle Tennessee leads but, lets face it, I rather drive to Knoxville than Nashville!! Plus those leads are not definate.

Yes, I will not let anyone have any of them unless they are fixed. They have all been fixed except for the mothers (obviously) and they too will be fixed when I finally get them to go in the live trap and the smallest kittens still. The ONE time I caught one of the mothers was when she was nursing still, so I had to let her go again. Grrrr. Now she knows better.

Really didn't think about the paper... I'm so internet driven. It is a good idea. $10 beats adoption fees and if someone can't get to PPAW they can't beat that price for spay/neutering.

Thanks! I'll look into it. I know Knox News Sentinel is high, but maybe the Tennessee Trader or a local small town paper first at least.

Edited to make my garble make sense!!!

Love it.

@tnchickenut Sorry but I already have 2 inside the house and a new stray outside with at least 1 kitten. That's not counting the 5 outside cats the neighbor has, thank goodness they have all been fixed.
