Quote: it is pretty rare but it has happened. If im not mistaken there are two types of worms that can be passed to the egg. I suppose the ones found came from a hen that was just absolutely full of worms though. I just stick to my twice a year plan and like I said a few pages back; it seems expensive at 1st, but once you have your supplies they should last a very long time.

barnqueen...

You still need to get rid of that roo and take one of mine? Mother in law will be here on Saturday and I can send it home with her to be fattened up for the pressure cooker
I want him.

Got a question for you too.
I had a young SG silkie pullet that is always the first to be out when the door opens and she is so tiny she can get between the wires thus why she is called Tadpole. But she stays right next to the fence and never wanders. Today I noticed she did not do that and stood over with some others but looked like something was wrong with her throat. I picked her up and tilted her forward. A lot of mucus started running out and her craw was pretty full so I gently squeezed and more came out. It was about a 1/4 cup. I put her down and she ran over and eat like a pig then went to the water container and drank...and drank. I just thought of something while writing this. I have been putting all the show girls up at night in cages. I forgot to put water in last night. Could she have just over-indulged?? That seems to be the only thing. I put her alone in a cage and she was really ticked off so she has not lethargy.
I am having problems with a couple runny noses. Not real bad but one makes the little noise I do when my nose is running due to allergies. I have them on sulmet and sprayed with oxine. I never know when to worry or when to not be too concerned..I know...it is a anal thing. I don't know if the change of weather could be the problem possibly. Like me right now. Anyone have an idea??

I just read my post and my comment DID NOT come out right.

I did not mean an anal thing but instead I am becoming more anal about things that pop up or that I think are popping up. Good heavens...I am not even making sense to myself.

Anyone around ETN want Sulmtaler cockerels? I'm shipping one to California, going to eat a few... just asking before I butcher and then someone says "Oh I wish I knew". So here is the heads up... their days are numbered and I have one 5 month old available and 2-4 (can't decide) 3 month old's. No girls... sorry. I didn't hatch enough to share.

I just love the breed so far... waiting on that first egg is the best!!
wow...I had to look that one up, LOL. Very interesting history. Greenfire??

sounds like she probably over indulged and started on a sour crop. If she is all burpy and acting weird in the morning then go over to my coop page for that link on sour crop.

I dont know if you feed scratch in the evening or not but here are my thoughts on it.

I dont entirely agree with the mainstream either of giving scratch in the evening. Basically many people do it (more in the winter) because of corn being such a hot grain and can help keep them warm at night from the action of digestion of all the sugar. But they tend to gorge, and the grain gets digested so much slower. That means it stays in the crop longer as it waits its turn down the tube so the gizzard can grind it up. And then if they are not full of enough of grit, it backs up even more.

I feed a little in the early am and when it gets real cold out I'll give a little more in the afternoon

My son. He's 22 and a sgt in the army. I almost fell over. (when my husband called me grandma, I almost threw up)
Kind of old isn't he? I got to shock my parents at 19...

(see? I can laugh about it 10 years later) that means if my oldest is like me I could be just turning 40 and be "gramps". I think I'm going to strongly encourage both my boys to hold off. College, work and parenting (not to mention new marriage) was really taxing at that age.

haaha - we knew what you meant - lol BUT yes I am the same way. My husband tells me I am just looking for boogers but I can't help it. I spend so much time with the chickens, that from day to day I can tell if one individual is acting weird or off from their norm.

I am beginning to see & beleive that owing chickens is not as easy or little hands on as throwing some feed & water out there everyday. In just the few months I have owed chickens I have already had 3-4 deaths, mostly under a couples months of age but just makes you wonder. Overall all my current appear healthy (except one, that has just been a weakling for @ 3 months, but gets no worse, nor better ????)

I'm done acquiring and/or hatching for several months and now just want to make sure what I have thrives & stays healthy but from what i've learned from everyone here on BYC & personal friends, it happens all the time that you will lose one or two here & there for what may appear no apparent reason. Matter of fact, my daughter just told me she lost a serama hen, she has had a few weeks, that appeared healthy, was laying eggs etc. and then she just died last night ?????? said she was acting just fine until yesterday ??????

I'm almost stressed over worrying from day to day what I may wake up to.
