You are in Ooltawah? Call "Snyder's Feed" in Athens... they sell their chicks every year... they may have pullets available from their farm, not in their store mind you, so try to get ahold of the owner.

It's kinda a bad time of year to find hens. Most people already sold off what they wanted by to sell by now.

In my opinion, if hens are all you can have, going with chicks from hatchery is the best way to get what you want and be sure they are all female. If you are a "chicken snob" and have to have high class, high quality birds and still be sure they are all female... better be prepared to pay more money and even be able to have them shipped in. Be advised... there are many on CL that sell spent hens and fib a bit about their laying rate. Again, if you can wait, get some from hatchery....... that said, there are great people here, but trying to get people to let go of hens is going to be hard. ;)

Thanks for the info tnchickenet - I call and see what they have. I wanted 'outside ready' hens as I don't have a place inside to keep little chicks. No, I don't have to have the high class or high quality chickens, it's more important to me that they are able to be handled. My son is really looking forward to that. I know the timing is bad, but thought I'd start here instead of craigslist. :)

Hello, congrats on finishing the coop before getting chickens! I got the chickens and then talked DH into building a coop. How old is your son? My kid's like the chicks more then the chickens. They do like collecting the eggs, but they would much rather play with the babies. They are ages 4 and 9. If you are set on hens/pullets, check out craigslist in your area and/or put a wanted ad up. Also there is going to be having a show in Nov. There should be lots to choose from there. Here is the link for that info: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/698527/shows-near-eastern-tn

Mypetchicken is always an option.

Contrastphoto - my son is 11 and has been a big help in getting everything built and ready. I looked at that thread and it looks interesting, I'll try to attend! Because I don't have anywhere or any equipment to keep little chiks inside, I'm hoping to get some hens old enough to be outside. Thanks for the info!

The Love's Creek park is very easy to find, free, has a natural spring, creek, walking path/trail and I think it has playground stuff for kids, large open area & covered picnic area. I think its a first come first serve. I am going to Knoxville Friday and will go by & double check. If I don't forge I will take my camera & get pics. Here is the link to the pic I found online: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cheneworth/7097416505/ The park is on the left you can't see it for the tree.

Here is a better link: http://www.outdoorknoxville.com/places/greenways/east/spring-place-park-greenway

And here is the map: http://maps.google.com/maps?oe=utf-...a=X&ei=_AVrUNf6JZGg8gSx4ICgCA&ved=0CCQQ8gEwAA

The address is 5201 Parker Dirive, Knoxville. It is extremely easy to find. Just let me know what you think. Our weekends are flexible most of the time. I will plan on bringing at least one dessert does everyone like chocolate? I can bring several other things just make suggestions.

I forgot to add this is a fairly good location & they have updated it in the last few years. Its not far from the Forks of the River (is that the one where they have lots of ballgames near Comcast?). Well I got to get back to cleaning. Stupid house will not clean itself.

That looks like a neat place. I drug the map every which way and still am not sure I'm reading it correctly. That's not too far from the zoo, right? The location would be perfect as far as being centrally located. I'm just not very familiar with that area.

Quote: But you said the coop is completely ready, correct? If so...let me look at what I have coming up. I am moving a couple things around because my olive egger breeding is getting hard to keep straight right now. If I get rid of anything they will probably be 8-10 weeks old and will be from either the olive egg project or from my Welsummer roo over either my welsummer hen, or cuckoo marans hen. The thought did occur to get rid of the Golden Campine...but she will be too shy and flighty for you guys anyway. The 8 weekers will be fine by the time cold weather gets here as long as the coop is draft free. I'll try to take a closer look by tomorrow and let you know, if you are interested.

Stang and anyone else that wanted some......

The oxine and valbazen just shipped after a delay. Should be here by Friday at the latest.

With shipping it is going to come out to be the following (plus just a tad more depending on what cheap containers I can find, but it wont be much)

Oxine quart = $8.00

Valbazen 100ml's = $10.00

I need to keep 2 quarts of oxine, so there are 2 available

I need to keep 100 ml's of Valbazen, so there are 4 available

Stang gets 1st call, but anything she does not want is up for grabs.

Yes it is very close to the zoo: no more than 3 miles at the most. You get off I-40 at the Rutledge Pke exit (if I am not mistaken that's the zoo exit). Instead of going west toward the zoo (Magnolia Ave) you go east toward Mascot/Blaine. You go left at the second traffic light and its not over 100 yards to the park once you turn left at the light. If you are coming east on 640 go past the mall, take I-40W & take the first exit (Rutledge Pke) turn right. I am very familiar with the area & could probably lead you in from whichever direction you want to come.

That is if everyone wants to go there.

You know anything about "forks of the river" park near Knoxville

Good area? It shows they have a picnic facility, but hard to find other good info.

If its the one I am thinking about the name is Volunteer Park & its just off I-40 at the Asheville Hwy exit. Volunteer Park has 4-6 ball fields (at least one football) & restrooms but I don't know about picnic areas. I maybe wrong but that's the only one I can think of unless its one on John Sevier Hwy. I think there's a place near the Industrial Park where they play soccer. I don't know what kind of sports are going on this time of year other than football.

If you want I can go by there on Friday too and check it out. Man I hope I don't forget the camera!
