The shelter at the park where we had our first picnic stops reserving them the first week of Oct. So...may check to see if they may be free and of course would be first one there gets it.

@Humidity...seems mine do better if I ignore them.

Seriously my best hatches have been when I did not hover over them worrying. I incubate around 35-40% and raise it a little,,,maybe to 60% for hatching. Because mine are usually staggered I can't raise it too much. Like Bario said....I think everyone has their own personal way that works best for them.
I agree... my best hatches seem to be when I'm like "What is that peeping sound?" and then followed by "OH CRUD! THE EGGS!"

Storey's guide... usually co-op and TSC have a copy for sale... greyish blue (the chicken one) with some silver laced wyandottes on the cover. It is a excellent book for people new to chickens.
Storey's are the best you can get when it comes to care info. They are very thorough and the info is trust worthy.

I'm gone a little over 3 hours due to school.. and there are 35 posts I've missed.. so I'm going to try and catch up... but I'm going to post to things I wanted to express my opinions on...

What do you think? I think she could stand to be a bit more "plump" or rounder chest, depending on how you talk chicken. Still her plumage is outstanding. She is a bantam Barnevelder, btw... and they are a breed I don't see ever cutting out.
I really like her color, and sheen... but for a bantam, I'd like to see a bit more compact bird (of course I have no idea what a true barnevelder looks like)... she looks so "tall and skinny/scraggely (kind of like a leghorn)" lol... I don't care if one of those isn't a word.

WOW!!

I always imagined I would do basically A 5 stall horse type barn with (5) 10x10 stalls down one side and a 42" walk way down the other side. Then each stall would have a pop door leading to it's own 10x100 run.

Lets see? one building 60 foot long x nearly 14 foot wide and a crap lod of fencing. yep, I'll get right on that when I hit the lottery
If I ever get these last 3 horses sold I will have an empty barn with 3 10x12 stalls and a birthing stall that is 24x12. Tack room....10x12 ...10 ft wide breeze way and then the wash bay I use to process chickens.,,.or did. But I can't talk hubby into putting chickens in it.....I think it scares him that my chicken math will go willy nilly.

This is my hen house cat, Tag-Along. She likes to lounge around during the day. I caught her today waiting for a mouse to come out. The chickens decided to come cheer her on.

Here are the pics Bario wanted me to post of the brooder he built that is great for wintering young chicks. He is graciously letting me use it!

This is the top..underneath the shavings is a metal shelf. They help to insulate the heat underneath

This is the underside of it. not the bulb as a heat source. and the last pic shows the front part raised a bit for the chicks to access underneath. You can put their water and food so the big chickens cannot get to it.

She (really They) are much heavier than a LF leghorn... they just aren't true bantam size. Now imagine how big the LF Barnies are! Lol

I actually have bred down size a bit. She is smaller than her parents and grandparents. So I'm working on getting them smaller and smaller. I don't want them to ever be "true bantam" size because to be really honest... their inbetween size makes them perfect to me and what I want/like. Their eggs are "table worthy" size (about the size of storebought white eggs) and I have yet to eat them, but the carcass is better for couples or people wihtout kids (me).

OK...I do not know how I got this coloration or what it would be called. Anyone care to give it a shot?? The pics don't show it well but the colors in his wings and back are shades of mahogany, blue and a couple other colors. He is unusual...just trying to decide it if would make a good project to work on. The feathering on his neck is more of a silver than white.

OK..this is my last post....promise.. Anyone interested in buying 2 blue FCM hens already laying? $20 each. I am going to look at them tomorrow. It is a friend of mine. She has some nice chickens but wants to move down to only bantams. She already has bantam cochins but may be looking for more...i think someone one here raises them? PM me if interested!
