Like right now... the boxers are in the house (completely free to go outside) and barking at the noises the wind is making. Great. Good girls.... now, if you only would go outside and run off the possible intruder rather than be chickens and not be bothered to get out of your chair. BRATS! lol I want a dog who will go out the door and up to the fence where the intruder is, and if the intruder is already done his/her intruding... they get bit. My boxers will be "Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey... can you get us a goodie? .Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey " UNTIL you touch me... then you are dead. But I don't want to even be touched. I want property protectors, is what I'm saying... my dogs will die to save me... but what about my stuff? They say "Eh, take it. Mom will just get a new one."

Good luck on the rescues they always seem full. Maybe he could run an add & offer them for a reduced price?

I have always leaned toward the black animals 4 out of 5 are black and has been a trend for as long as I can remember. Dh's dog is the exception. Also 3 out of 5 are rescue/shelter babies.
I have had alot of black dogs growing up... one of which still lives with my parents... she is a mutt that was thrown in our trash can (well my parent's) with her collar embedded in her neck. Actually all our mutts were black. It was the purebreds that weren't... I grew up with two GSD and three pugs.... and for a short time a Rottweiler who showed up one day. lol

I got to remember what my mother would always tell me "You can save them all, Stacy."

Gus-Hi who are you? Friend, friend, you love me you just don't know it yet!

Riley-Announces something or someone is outside. Once inside he's shy & then fawns all over them. As longs as its people.

Cass- Who are you, what the *&*& are you doing here, let me see if I can knock the door open to get to you, etc. Once inside he continues to voice his displeasure until mom gives command. He obeys but never takes his eyes off said person/persons.

Dudley (the JRT) barks at EVERYTHING and everyone... but won't come in. He pees on himself when you walk up to him directly from where he was owned before kicking and beating him, so he is no good.... though he did slice my hand open the day I took him.

Greta is my patrol officer, but she has to be convinced it is a good reason to get up and on top of that, she is the heaviest sleeping dog I have ever met. Sometimes I literally have to pick her up and put her in her bed, all the while she sleeps and never wakes through all that.

Heidi will bite and scratch even playing... she LOVES to bark and growl and be mean in general, but she will stay where I am. I want her to GO to the problem, not be the last line of defense by staying by my side.

That said, Greta has already saved my life once. Too long a story, but that is my baby right there and I will never go hiking without her. She will never die and don't try to tell me that it is impossible for her to live as long as me, because she will dang it!

@ tnchicknut....sounds to me like you need an Anatolian Shepard. Great protectors which they are bred to do. But...as with GPs..they need to start out with your flock. A young or grown dog will protect cause it is their nature but to have a dog who puts your flock or herd first..they need to live with them as a pup. I have had both and they are wonderful. I want another Anatolian. I use to work with a rescue and had one that was found roaming in a field near death. He was wonderful. I am pretty sure they is a GD rescue in TN. There actually is a dog that was bred to guard flocks...they are in Puerto Rico. I do know of one in my area. They are not big but huge protectors.

@Bario...I hatched 4 Show Girls, 3 silkies, 8 polish. Had 4 that where not fertile. My Hova is the 1583...I bought it new a little over a year ago. I am really happy with it. They are pretty tough though the fan is going to need replaced. It runs but will slow down and start up again.. (Now watch mine quit since I bragged) If I bought another styrofoam one I would get the same thing. I think I gave $105 for mine inc.shipping. I would love a bigger one but just can't afford it. I still use my LG too. I haven't added up how many eggs I have hatched this year.
I have 2 groups of silkie eggs coming. I FINALLY found some Columbian silkie eggs. I an like thchicknut...I like the out of the ordinary. I am so excited!!! I see a new project in the future next spring. After these eggs I am shutting down for a month or 2 then starting back in Feb for 2013 season. I don't know but AJ has one of the large incubators so he may have beat me on numbers.
On the feed. I mix laying and flock raiser 50/50 then I add about 15 lbs BOS and 20 lbs. crimped oats and 10lb. fine cracked corn. So..I think my roos don't get enough laying pellets to be harmful. The roos that are alone get the same minus the laying pellets. I also feed peppers and other veggies mixed with cooked rice. I buy reduced fruits at the grocery for them as well.
Finally for the first time I was able to get Satan out without him taking a hunk out of me. Maybe he is warming up to me.

I love Meyers too. They are the only one I have ordered from and I was very happy with my order. I hated having to order 25 chicks but I split it with a friend. Oh...I am also looking for some adult ameracaunas for a friend. Is everyone else having low egg numbers? Out of all my hens I am getting 1 olive egg a day. Bummer

I am bringing to sale at the Newport show....Belgium D'Uccles, some Crele Polish, silkies and quilt signs for hen houses. If anyone wants to pre-order a certain pattern for the quilt squares let me know. I hope to have hand-made soap if I can get it aged enough by then.
OK...I tried to consolidate my posts into one. Did it work?

Well, I first looked into GP... but again, don't like what everyone else has. In general, if everyone's doing it... I question it. So, I looked at Anatolians but then I discovered Kangals. However, I haven't ruled out Anatolians ... but I have ruled out Great Pyrenees two reasons... one they bark constantly quietly all night. "I'm here, I'm here, I'm here, stay away, I'm here" and secondly they are so popular (at least locally) as livestock dogs, I don't trust the breeding. I know line breeding in dogs isn't the best either... but somewhere between the person who just happens to have a male and female and the person who breeds for ribbons lies the person who breeds for the breed. That is one big reason I like the Kangal... they aren't AKC showable and still are solely used for farming. That said, you can find people who raise Anatolians purely on the farm. Like I said, I haven't ruled them out.
But for the home, I still lean towards Mastiffs or Bull Mastiffs.... the dog for both farm and yard guard would be Tibetian Mastiff.... but I am not fond of their long fur. AGH!!!!

If you decide on a mastiff I know a man who raises them. I think he has German line? Anyway...he is a great breeder and you can be assured his breeding is impeccable.

I must ask (I live in north Alabama and travel middle TN frequently) are mastiffs good livestock guardian dogs? I am looking for good ones myself.
