its not the chickens, its actually the poop, feed, and egg smells more. i use vinegar, as the bears and other critters dont like it, but hens just get used to after a week, and i set the dogs on anything that tries to come to close to the yard.

as for the guy in maryville, i think i knew him through an old gf, he worked for the newport library, he seemed to have a good idea of how to turn them around for profit, but did stress care and mantainance, even though they seemed cramped. i bear got alot of his and destroyed cages and stuff, so dont know how well his setups are now.

Happy Mothers Day to all those that are or going to be! And happy Chicken Mothers Day, to all those who are proud momma's of chickens

I trail ride and have ran upon bears more and more each year. Lose of habitat and the fact that their numbers are growing does not help. They have even come into our camp while we where outside around the fire. I carry a gun now when riding. I used to work at a private zoo and took care of 21 bears of 6 breeds. I learned a lot just by watching them and working with them. (It was a full contact zoo) They are very intelligent and resourceful. I know it sounds bad but they need to either re-locate a large number of them or raise the kill limit for hunters. It is not going to be long before people start getting attacked. It is just a wild animal being what it is...wild. Being primarily omnavours..they do not eat meat often but if there is no other food source. The DO love feed..we would find them in our camp where the horses where eating the feed they dropped or just pulling the feed buckets off and helping themselves. One thing you can do..does not sound wonderful but...let the males go outside on the boundary and urinate. Also..I think I told someone about keeping raccoons and possums away with a low electric fence with slips of aluminum foil with peanut butter smeared on them. Works for bears too. Be careful about your dogs..they can do serious damage it they get ahold of them and believe me...bears are very fast runners. Has TWRA come out and tried to trap it?? I hope everything works out.

I just wanted to tell everyone how much I enjoyed meeting them at the Newport poultry show. It really was an experience! 742 birds shown and very fussy judges who just could not agree on results. I finally gave up at 4 and left. But..as I said it was fun and I look forward to going to the one they will be having in November. One high point was getting my English Orpingtons from tennesseeckn. Here is a pic of her roo...Roo with my holding him. He is huge and from what she told me...the smallest. But I loved his personality and look forward to breeding them with my Lavenders.

The show was great I only stayed an hour but enjoyed every minute of it ,when we was leaving a women had some chickens get loose in her car and they had crapped everywhere , I know I wouldn't have wanted that to happen to me but my wife laughed all the way home

Anyone have listings of upcoming shows in the southeast? Probably within about 250 miles of Knoxville, TN? So I guess that would include TN, KY, SC, GA, AL? I think NC is out because of the new regs.

For anyone that had to listen to me whine, complain, and obsess at the show, I just had to share...

When I got home there were seven new babies in the 'bator, and three of them are BLUE!!!

Now I really, really don't want to let these guys go!

I learned a WHOLE lot Saturday. It was great to meet other chicken people and put faces with names for my BYC friends. The judge hated my Roo and thought he was too big for the standard. When I told my daughter that they thought he was too fat she said, "That's mean. Boy, it's a good thing they didn't see our OTHERS!"

Just confirmed my suspicions that showing is just not for me. I do well to get myself and my kids bathed and presentable. There's no way I can commit the time and energy it would take to get a bird in show condition. I really admired the work that some of those people were putting into the competition. I think I'll just go to shows to hang out with other chicken people and drool over other people's birds.

Thanks so much to TNBarnQueen for holding my hand through the whole process. You're the best!

I hope everyone had a great Mother's Day!
