Because if you ask 20 people you get 20 answers. Everyone thinks they know the best way... and not to sound mean, but no one told me. I just used common sense and some creative thinking.

Seriously, though, I have learned in my years that people don't listen to advice... somewhere along the line people thought egg cartons were a good idea. So if one gets jarred they all get jarred the same. To me, egg cartons are lazy... it takes me about 20 minutes to pack one box. I also should add that from the best breeders I have got eggs from... they never use cartons. It's the backyarders and newbies that do. wink

Sure, I expect there would be a quite few "opinions"

, which is fine. Maybe shipper A's technique works well for a certain region while shipper B's doesn't.

IMO, other than showing newbies how to correctly pack eggs, we need to tackle the problem with shipped eggs at the source of the problem--the Post Office. Bird Shippers of America fought for their right to ship live birds, so egg sellers/buyers should do the same, in terms of expecting better handling of packages. It helps that bird shippers use a certain box design that lets the sorting employees know right away that they are dealing with lives. Why not have a special box designed for shipping eggs? The problem with using the standard USPS boxes is that those all look alike...but, what if the egg box is a hot pink box with a pre-printed design of eggs and chicks? Now that will stand out in a sea of standard USPS boxes in the sorting department.

We need to have an organized effort to let USPS know that we're tired of paying a lot of money for a box of eggs to receive careful handling when it's obvious the box was kicked, dropped, stepped on, or whatever...or x-rayed.

I still think it would help to have a special box designed for shipping eggs!

I still think there needs to be a stickied thread with plenty of photos of how to pack eggs for shipping. If a buyer wanted his/her eggs packed a certain way, a link could be provided to the seller. Why don't you start a how-to thread?

ARGH but on the up side, the kids went to my moms' so it's quiet here. Gonna fold some clothes and watch the news, i never get to watch the news unless its at 5am or at 11pm. Nothing in between, i feel so losted!

Happy Humpday everyone. And if anyone is interested, there is a fundraiser Friday night in Greeneville for a local animal rescue, they are wonderful and are in need of some support. So if anyone wants to do a nice dinner out, live music by Greenevilles own Jerry Malone, come to Ella's at 7pm on Friday night. Here's the link to their site to view the menu, www.ellasgoodmusicgoodfood.com

I'll be there with both rugrats!!!

ok the post i copied here last night with the girl selling the coch in roos...she is now offering them for free. Anyone want them i'll forward the number to you. If need be i could pick them up for you and you could come get them here, but i can not keep them!

Ring, ring Nella,

So the girls seem to be scratching more and taking more dust baths (i know in part to keep cool) but am worried about creepy crawly critters on them. I have not seen anything at all though. Can you say if there is a particular place on them to look that is easier to see lice or other bugs? Do you use a preventive or only treat when you see them?? What is everyone elses experience? I have always been lucky I guess and have never had a problem before.

I treat as needed. That entire coop was totally covered in sevin dust recently, an entire can under the shavings when it was cleaned out a month or so ago and the chickens do like to dust bathe in the shavings so they kind of self treat themselves. Now having said that. I meant to treat them each with a small dose of ivomec pour on as a going away present just in case (i have just started using that) but forgot. But I have only treated my mottleds with that so far, none of my big birds. Because I have tons of trees and brush and long grass and weeds, the creepy crawlies are kind of a given here. I You could always get a can of seven dust, add it to whereever they are dustbathing and then they kind of "self treat" themselves, if it makes you feel better

katchley,
in addition to that pm you sent me:

Just depends on what you are looking for. "Poultrylady" used to keep quite a large diversity, nellabean has or will have a few dif breeds, wegotchickens may or may not have d'uccles, etc.

Let us know what you are still looking for and someone on here will probably know a reputable breeder for eggs-POL's

Wanted to tell you those cochin x's are doing great. One of my larger NHR now sleeps next to them on the roost. Since she is #2 in the pecking order....that is pretty good. I may let them all out together sooner than I thought. Megan has adopted them (especially the bearded black) as her own and goes out to talk to her every single day, LOL

OHHHHH we finally got rain here last night, still looks like it's gonna give us more this morning. Wonder if I should let the chickies out to get the wet grass loving bugs or not risk having to go out while it pours to get them back in. >ponders< ehhhh they can stay in for now till i see what its gonna do, i dont feel like singing in the rain.

Good Morning everyone!
