The Barred Rock pullets, POL, one in front was totally freaked out by the show. One in back is starting to redden up!

The two little bitties.....buff is half olive egger half cochin, 50/50 chance of laying green or brown. Black should be cochin mix (she was fluffing her feathers)

Super busy this weekend...but did get electric out to the coop
ya.gif

125 feet of wire to get out there, but have light and two outlets now. (outside motion light is solar)

Cleaned out coop with new bedding...

which reminded me I wanted to get everyone's preference on bedding material, technique, coverage, etc..

We have 150 sq./ft. on floor and use 4 bags of pine flake and one bag of cedar, or 3 pine and two cedar (sizes and type from TSC).
That gives us an average of 4-5 inches fluffed and lasts about 10 weeks. This time we also did a can of seven dust on top.

I tell any one new to use 1 bag of pine and 1/3 bag of cedar from tsc for every 35 sq./ft. and change 8-12 weeks depending on bird load per sq ft. (We are at 12 sq/ft per bird)

I'd love to hear from everyone else as to what works for you as well so some of the new folks have something to go by

From what I understand, you're not supposed to use cedar at all as it can be toxic to them. Inside my coop, even the faux coup, i use straw or hay. In my pen i've put down sand and have been super happy with it. I got a huge package of pine shavings for the chicks and have it in the brooder and am considering sawdust >we have a saw mill very very close< to put down under them in the coop. I used this with my first chicks and it seemed to work well, they could take "baths" in it >fling it around and pretend to be bathing at least< But honestly they only sleep in there so I just need to try and keep clean up easy and quick.

Interesting. Of course, I've never done any of this, just read about it. I've heard the same about cedar. U can us wood shaving but only well aged (whatever that means), never straw or hay on dirt or grass bc it can cause molds that affect respiratory, but its great on cement floors. Some guy uses oat leaves, and at least 12" of it. This is why this site is so great, its the tried and true, what really works n what doesn't. I'm concerned about using Sevin dust in their pen. I've seen this before, but would think it was unsafe for them
